The 2024 NFL Draft came and went this week with minimal fireworks.

There were some mild surprises, like the Atlanta Falcons’ bizarre move with Michael Penix Jr., but overall this wasn’t the most eventful of drafts.

The biggest stories coming out of it were how Jayden Daniels’ mom looked, J.J. McCarthy’s girlfriend’s leather outfit and Brock Bowers’ girlfriend’s wild photos leaking out. There’s a reason for that.

Coming into the event, the Chicago Bears held the first overall pick and countless other selections.

Many were curious to see whether they would be able to utilize their high picks effectively. In the end, this is the roster they came away with:

  • Round 1 – Caleb Williams, QB, USC (No. 1 overall)
  • Round 1 – Rome Odunze, WR, Washington (No. 9 overall)
  • Round 3 – Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale (No. 75 overall)
  • Round 4 – Tory Taylor, P, Iowa (No. 122 overall)
  • Round 5 – Austin Booker, EDGE, Kansas (No. 144 overall)

While many people are excited about the Bears’ draft picks, the reality is that a lot of it depends on what sort of player Williams turns out to be. And there are countless questions surrounding that.

Off the field, there are serious concerns about his commitment to being a good player and emotional wellbeing. This is a guy who randomly decided to take a vacation midway through the draft process.

On the field, he proved last year that was incapable of leading USC to a College Football Playoff. And this is despite having considerably more weapons on his side than he will with the Bears, and even though he faced much less stiff competition than he will in the NFL.

Williams could turn out to be a good player, but thus far hasn’t proven that he will be.

Odunze was a very good receiver in college, but he is being handed a rookie quarterback who has yet to prove he can overcome any sort of real adversity. He is going to be asked to do a lot.

The Bears’ pick of Taylor, although he is undeniably the best punter in the draft, felt like it came a little early also.

All in all, it wasn’t a terrible draft for the Bears. But it certainly wasn’t the amazing one that a lot of people are hyping it up as.

A lot of folks aren’t very familiar with Williams, but those who followed his career at Oklahoma and USC are. And Bears fans are in for a rude awakening when they realize who they bet their franchise on.
