Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers won’t feature for the Philadelphia Eagles in their NFL season opener, having been ruled out by injury.

The Eagles take on the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 of the 2024 regular season today, in the first ever NFL game to be held in Brazil.

What injury does Isaiah Rodgers have?

Rodgers, 26, had been aiming to make his first regular-season appearance for the Eagles, but the Pennsylvanians announced yesterday that the former Indianapolis Colts player will miss out with a hand issue.

Signed by the Eagles in August 2023, Rodgers sat out the whole of last season after being suspended by the league for violating its gambling policy. He last saw action in the NFL in December 2022.

Eagles linebacker Devin White has also been ruled out of the Packers Game through injury. The 26-year-old is dealing with an ankle problem.

History is to be made at São Paulo’s Arena Corinthians today, as Brazil becomes the fourth country to host an NFL Game outside of the United States. The clash will be the first the league has ever held in South America.

Can Eagles secure second Super Bowl title?

The Eagles are heading into their fourth season under head coach Nick Sirianni, having so far achieved a hat-trick of playoff appearances since the New York native took charge at Lincoln Financial Field.

Beaten in the Super Bowl two years ago, Philadelphia were eliminated in the Wild Card round in 2023, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The franchise’s only Super Bowl triumph to date came in the 2017 season, when a team coached by Doug Pedersen beat the New England Patriots 41-33 at Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Eagles are fifth favourites to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy this year, with bookmakers pricing Sirianni’s men at +1200 for victory in Super Bowl LIX at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome. The Kansas City Chiefs, the back-to-back defending champions, are the +500 frontrunners to seal a ‘three-peat’ of NFL championships.
