Bechtel was born Gabriella Leigh Bechtel on July 28, 1997, in Orange County, Calif., to a Mexican mother and a Swiss-German father.

Growing up, Bechtel said she dealt with a lot of bullying due to her ethnicity.

“The majority of students at my high school were beautiful, strictly white blond girls, and my sister and I were Hispanic. I was called some pretty awful things. But then I just learned to laugh at it,” she told British Vogue in May 2023.

The “Better Run” singer had early dreams of becoming a ballerina and would spend most of her time in the dance theater.

“I was convinced I was going to be a professional ballerina and I still am,” she told the magazine.

After graduating high school, she then moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of dancing ballet but instead ended up in dancing videos on MTV.

Bechtel became the lead vocalist and songwriter of the punk rock band Nasty Cherry, which was created by Charli XCX.

The band also includes guitarist Chloe Chaidez, drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson and bassist Georgia Somary.

The women were originally strangers when they all moved into a house in LA to make music together for the first time for Netflix’s docuseries/reality show “I’m with the Band: Nasty Cherry,” which premiered on the streaming platform in November 2019.

“We are all in that house together for that time of filming. That’s time that we took off of work, didn’t see friends, and focused solely on the project to make sure that it was all worth it,” Bechtel told Harper’s Bazaar in 2019.

“I don’t know if it was a lot at risk, I mean, I think personally and individually, there was a lot at risk for everyone. But it was a ball in the sky, really. We didn’t know what was going to come of it.”

Nasty Cherry released their debut EP, “Season 1,” in November 2019.

While dancing in Blood Orange’s music videos, modeling agencies noticed Bechtel.

“I was an unpaid, hard-working model for a very long time,” she told British Vogue.

However, her hard work paid off and she was signed with IMG and walked in Diesel’s autumn/winter 2023 fashion show in February 2023.

Bechtel also starred in campaigns for Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty, Bottega Veneta, Kim Kardashian’s Skims and Heaven By Marc Jacobs.

Bechtel’s ’90s goth aesthetic is the key to her appeal and she gets fashion inspo from dominatrixes and ’50s pin-up stars.

“I have a ton of leather jackets and leather pants — I’ve been trying to find the perfect pair. I’ve finally just learned to dress for myself. I used to really dress up for other people, but now I just wear what I feel comfortable in,” she told Vogue.

She has a large social media following

As of this publication, Bechtel has more than 800,000 followers on Instagram and more than 400,000 followers on TikTok.

Several of her cooking videos started going viral during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led her to curate menus for fashion brands.

“Growing up, my family was always cooking,” she told Vogue. “My mum is Mexican and my dad is German so there were all these different cultures colliding in our house … My mum would always be putting a twist on a recipe and my dad would be grilling something or making sauerkraut.”

Bechtel continued, “Family meals were a big part of our life, we’d sit down together after school without our phones and talk about our day, and the cooking process was always a big part of that.”

The “Music With Your Dad” singer is also working on a cooKBOok due to how well-received her Recipes have been in the public.

“I don’t know what will happen with these videos,” she told Vogue. “Social media is always changing. It’s so unpredictable. But for now, it’s working.”

She’s engaged to Matty Healy

A few months after Healy ended his short-lived romance with Swift in June 2023, he began dating Bechtel.

In September 2023, the couple was seen on a PDA-filled stroll around New York City.

The musicians couldn’t keep their hands off each other as they waited inside a restaurant.

On June 11, 2024, Bechtel sparked engagement rumors when she showed off a massive diamond ring on that finger to her Instagram Stories.

“Marrying the 1975 is very brat @trumanblack,” she captioned a snap of her hand adorned with the “extremely rare” ring, which featured a black rock encrusted with diamonds.

Ajay Anand, CEO of Rare Carat, told Page Six Style in June 2024 that Healy appeared to have opted for a rose-cut stone that could be as large as 9 carats.

After Bechtel’s photos surfaced, Healy’s mom, Denise Welch, confirmed that the pair was engaged, saying on her “Loose Women” talk show that she “couldn’t be more thrilled” for them.

“She’s from Los Angeles. She’s absolutely gorgeous,” Welch gushed. “We couldn’t be happier. She is everything that I would want in a daughter-in-law.”
