Let’s be real: the 3-point contest is, without a doubt, everyone’s favourite part of the All-Star Skills Challenge. Last year, ion Sabrina Ionescu put up an historic performance, but this year she’s set to give up her crown to a new winner who will look to outdo the fantastic shooting of the 26-year-old.

As well as the 3-point challenge, there will also be a skills challenge and a 3x3 game, a new event which will see the Olympic team go up against an U23 national team in an exhibition game.

As we have become used to, five racks with five balls each are spread out around the arc. Four of the racks will have four regular basketballs worth one point and one “money ball” worth two points. One rack will have five “money balls.” As well as these shots, there will also be two long-rangers which will give the shooters a chance to win 3 points with each shot.

The 3-pointer will be a two-round event, and players will have 70 seconds each to pop off as many shots as they can before the buzzer. At the end of the round, the top two will progress to the final, where they will shoot again. The shooter with the most points in the final round will be crowned as champion.

The WNBA has seen a sensational increase in popularity over the past 12-18 months, with rookie players such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese driving up the storylines and, as a result, numbers of spectators. It was revealed earlier in the week that a staggering $2.2 billion media deal was agreed, one that will see the league receive an average of $200 million per season, according to Sports Business Journal. Sources told SBJ that the deal also comes “with an opening to earn more over that period”.

Disney, Ion, CBS and Amazon are the current WNBA media partners, although their deal, worth $50m per year, is set to expire in 2025, with the new plan set to introduce ESPN, NBC and Amazon as the new hosts of the product.
