Which teams have qualified for the 2023-24 Champions League Round of 16?
Following Tuesday’s fixtures on matchday five of the 2023-24 Champions League group stage, 10 teams have booked their places in the Round of 16, including big hitters Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City.
Which six clubs qualified on matchday four?
Six clubs had already progressed to the knockout stage by the end of matchday four, with Madrid, City and Bayern Munich’s perfect records allowing them to make light work of the group stage.
The Bavarians even secured top spot in Group A with two matches to spare, while three wins for fellow Germans RB Leipzig meant they joined City in wasting little time in progressing from Group G. There was a similar scenario in Group D, where Real Sociedad and Inter quickly claiming the top two spots, with the winner of the section all that is left to be decided.
Barça and Dortmund the latest Round of 16 qualifiers
A further four teams secured their spots in the last 16 on Tuesday, with victories for Atlético Madrid over Feyenoord and Lazio against Celtic taking the Spaniards and Italians through from Group E.
Borussia Dortmund’s progression, meanwhile, has arguably been the most impressive of all so far. Drawn in the so-called “Group of Death” alongside AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United, the 1997 winners posted a third successive victory at San Siro to become the first team to qualify from Group F.
Finally, after failing to get out of their group in the last two seasons, Barcelona are back among the big boys following Tuesday’s win over Porto. Xavi Hernández’s side squandered the chance to qualify on matchday four after losing to Shakhtar Donetsk but have avoided a nervy last fixture thanks a comeback win over the Portuguese.
When is matchday six of the Champions League group stage?
The final group stage fixtures will take place on Tuesday 12 December and Wednesday 13 December, by which point we will know the identities of all 16 qualifiers.
When is the Round of 16? When is the draw?
The first legs of the Round of 16 ties will be played on 13, 14, 20 and 21 February next year, with the returns following on 5, 6, 12 and 13 March. The draw will be made on 18 December.
