Which New Supermarket Dethroned Wegmans As Best in USA
As New Yorkers, we are passionate about a LOT of things, right? The fact that we'll argue (and back up) the fact that New York pizza is far superior to Connecticut, the great debate of where the 'upstate' and 'downstate' parameters are (we are most definitely not upstate), and a long list of other die on this hill battles.
We, for some reason, are also very serious about our favorite grocery stores. It is rare to catch a committed Shop Rite customer stepping foot inside Stop & Shop, and Trader Joe's will always triumph Whole Foods in most of our books.
Let's Talk About Wegmans
We have asked, bargained, even begged for the Hudson Valley to get a Wegmans, yes there's one in Harrison, lower HV, but we're whiny and want one even closer. Recently named as one of the best places to work, if you've never been to a Wegmans you are missing out on an experience.
More than just a grocery store, Wegmans has a lot of great features in store, plenty of options for dinner, and a prepared foods section that is sure to amaze. They even have a group of very passionate followers known as 'Wegmaniacs.'
Wegmans No Longer Tops Number 1 Supermarket List
Well, I was just as shocked to read the news as many were that Wegmans was recently dethroned from their reigning top position as America's best supermarket. Newsweek, just ths week, published the 2024 rankings and our beloved Wegmans has been bumped to number 2.
According to the data, a store that opened their first store in 2003, in NYC has jumped into the top spot, have you heard of the Asian-American chain called Great Wall?
Self-described as a 'large-scale fresh food integrated supermarket serving Chinese communities in North America,' they have 17 total locations, with three in NYC, none remotely close to the Hudson Valley.
In the supermarket category, Great Wall received a 92.69 out of 100, edging out Wegmans who came in at 90.89.
