Where has the 2024 Presidents Cup been played over the years? List of venues

The Presidents Cup will celebrate its 30th anniversary at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada this week. Although it may not have the same excitement as the Ryder Cup, it has become a significant event in the world of Golf, with players looking forward to participating every odd-numbered year. Qualifying for the Presidents Cup is a prestigious achievement many players strive for.

Unlike the Ryder Cup, which originated from the players’ idea, the Presidents Cup began in an office building. Despite this, it has endured for so long because the players believe in its values. When Commissioner Tim Finchem eventually left his position at PGA TOUR headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach after over 20 years in office, his most enduring legacy might be The Presidents Cup.

In 1994, the Ryder Cup was gaining momentum. The prevailing thought was that it was unfortunate that many top players from outside Europe and the United States didn’t have the opportunity to compete on that stage.

In early 1994, Deane Beman was the commissioner, and Tim Finchem was the PGA TOUR’s chief operating officer. Finchem, who would take over as commissioner on June 1, 1994, decided to launch The Presidents Cup. The event was organized quickly and efficiently, almost like no other Golfing event. The two managers asked the U.S. president (Bill Clinton) to back the comPetition to give the tournament the necessary weight and prominence.

Finchem recalls joining President Clinton now and then for a morning jog and praised his hosting of events at the White House. Later, when the president officially endorsed the tournament, this added a unique feel to the occasion, which continued when The Presidents Cup went to South Africa in ‘03, where Nelson Mandela spoke to the players at the traditional tournament dinner.

When they started looking for the venue, as they were trying to get the president involved and make that easy, they looked for a Golf course in Washington. They immediately fell in love with the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club course, a private Golf club located in Gainesville, Virginia, a suburb southwest of Washington, D.C., and the decision to the inaugural comPetition venue was there.

The PGA Tour creates and organizes the event. Each competition has an Honorary Chairman or Chairwoman, the head of state or government of the host nation.

The 2028 Presidents Cup will be held at Kingston Heath Golf Club, an iconic venue on the famous Melbourne Sandbelt.

This will be the fourth time the Presidents Cup will be held in Melbourne.

The TOUR has announced a long-term commitment with Visit Victoria to host the Presidents Cup in Melbourne in 2028 and 2040.
