When does the Copa América 2024 start and where is it? Dates and venue
The 2024 Copa América is right around the corner; with the new year closing in, preparations are already underway to make sure the 48th edition of the tournament, the second ever to be held in the USA, is the best it can be.
Argentina, with Lionel Scaloni at the helm, are the defending champions. The winners of the 2021 edition also claimed their third World Cup just over a year later, and have since been on an astonishing run of form that has seen them tour the world to further prove their credentials as one of the greatest teams on the planet.
However, by the time the cross-continental tournament comes around, it will be a huge task to prove their worth once again, with team such as Brazil, Uruguay and the USMNT set to make things tough for La Albiceleste.
When and where will the Copa América 2024 start?
CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American Football, confirmed that the opening match of the tournament will take place on Thursday June 20 and will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The kick-off time is not yet confirmed.
The venue for the tournament opener is the home of both the Atlanta Falcons (NFL) and Atlanta United (MLS) and has a capacity of up to 71,000. Opened in 2017, the ground had the honour of holding both the 2018 MLS All-Star Game as well as the 2019 Super Bowl.
Dan Corso, President, Atlanta Sports Council said that “hosting the Opening Match of this prestigious tournament is an incredible achievement by everyone involved and our region’s soccer profile has once again been elevated to the highest level with this announcement. We would like to thank our partners at Arthur M. Blank Sports + Entertainment, the City of Atlanta and Mercedes-Benz Stadium for their continued partnership and we look forward to working with them, as well as CONMEBOL and Concacaf to create a remarkable experience for all involvedâ€.
Which teams will play in the Copa América?
We know all but two teams who will be at the Copa América 2024, with Argentina looking to hold onto their crown. Overall, there are 16 teams from the 2 Confederations, with CONMEBOL being represented by a total of 10 countries.
The Group Stage draw has not yet happened, although we know that Argentina, Mexico, USA and Brazil will head the four groups going into the comPetition. The teams will play across 14 different stadiums in the USA, before the final, which will be held on July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
