It has been way too hot so far this summer but at some point, things will get cooler and you may want to plan a trip to visit a well-known hiking spot or trail. But what if someone in your group has a mobility issue?

Many people who may not be able to hike a steep mountain trail still want the ability to get out and enjoy the great outdoors during the summer and fall. The key is finding a place equipped for their needs as a visitor.

The New State Department of Environmental Conservation is a great resource. A complete statewide list of places to go is available through the NYS DEC. They also have an interactive map you can use to plan a trip.

Places that are mobility-friendly in the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley has many linear parks including the Walkway Over the Hudson, The R2R in New Paltz, and various Rail Trails that traverse a variety of places. Some trails are out in the woods or farm country, others go through towns and villages. These trails can be very welcoming to someone in a wheelchair but remember it is more than the surface and the incline that make a space mobility-friendly.

You also want the access to the parking lot to be close and facilities such as restrooms and eating establishment should be wheelchair friendly. Be sure to check out the information the NYS DEC has listed at dec.ny.gov. They list Education centers, campgrounds, day-use areas, waterways, and land-use spaces for all of New York State.
