Following what was apparently an impressive showing during the minicamp, the Los Angeles Chargers have chosen to pay their rookie accordingly. With that, the franchise has more or less finalized its roster for the coming season. Now, the work begins.

Chargers & Ladd McConkey agree to historic rookie deal

The Los Angeles Chargers have got themselves a rookie that they appear to be very happy with, to the extent that they are willing to pay him a whole lot. According to reports, rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey has agreed to a four-year contract that will see him receive the most guaranteed money in NFL History for the 34th overall pick - the position at which he was selected in this year’s NFL Draft. While details about the exact figure remain unclear, what we do know is that the deal is done.

Other famous 34th picks over the last decade have included Donovan Smith, Michael Pittman, and Christian Watson all of whom McConkey has surpassed with his deal. It is understood that the former Georgia standout has been solid in his sessions with his new team such that his new teammates have been left impressed including the Chargers No. 1 quarterback Justin Herbert. “He’s just picked up the offense so easily. It’s like he’s been a four or five-year vet,” Herbert said last week. “He understands the game, he understands leverage. He’s a smart player, he’s very athletic. He can beat man coverage, find the soft spot in zones.”

Where numbers are concerned, McConkey is coming off a season with the Bulldogs in which he notched 30 catches for 478 yards and two touchdowns across nine games. His limited appearances were down to a reoccurring ankle injury, as well as a back injury that lasted throughout the season, resulting in him missing four games. In total, his collegiate career saw him register 119 catches for 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns in three seasons. Along with Quentin Johnston who will likely see minutes in the position as well, McConkey is being promoted as the team’s No 1 pass catcher this coming season.
