To the utter despondence of Swifties the world over, the Eras tour is nearing its end. Friendship bracelets have been made and exchanged. Mash-ups and surprise songs have been sung. The stage lights have been dimmed, and the Tortured Poets Department has taken its curtain call. The end of an era harkens the start of another, seeking to answer the question on all our minds: What’s next for Taylor Swift after the Eras tour?

A historic day in the realm of concerts, March 17 2023 saw Taylor Swift’s Eras tour kicking off in Arizona, USA — and what an incredible journey it has been thus far. Following the close of its massive Europe and UK leg, the tour will return to North America, with performances slated for Miami, New Orleans, and Indianapolis. From November to early December, Swift will perform in Canada where she is expected to end almost two years of touring in Vancouver on December 8.

After spending almost two years on the stage, in the spotlight, singing her heart out to millions of fans and generating billions for the global economy, Taylor Swift is ready to lay her critically successful Eras tour to rest. And what an adventure it’s been.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure that the Eras tour has taken an incredible toll on Taylor Swift — physical, mental, and beyond. In addition to strength training and dance plus choreography sessions, Swift’s fitness routine for the Eras tour includes running on the treadmill while belting out her entire setlist. To put it simply, Swift has the stamina and endurance of an Olympian athlete — and she can even do it all with a broken heart.

When Swift isn’t putting her body through rigorous training, she’s exercising her brain to think of songs for the acoustic segment of her Eras tour. In this segment, Swift famously sings songs that did not make it into the official setlist. To date, only seven songs remain in her extensive discography that have not been performed during the Eras tour.

While the Eras tour has become an incredible phenomenon that has carved its place at the top of musical History, realising its success has been a daunting task. And while opinions may differ on Swift’s music, it is truth indelible that Swift and her team have accomplished much on the Eras tour, to great success.

So what’s next for Taylor Swift after the Eras tour ends?

It’s anybody’s guess what Taylor Swift will do with herself once the Eras tour ends this December, and speculations are hot in Swiftie circles. Given Swift’s penchant for laying low before releasing a masterpiece (as she did by releasing Folklore and Evermore mid-pandemic), it would not be beyond the realm of possibility for her to hit the ground running. While the singer has remained famously tight-lipped about her plans, here are some things we can see her doing in her post-tour era.

Writing a movie and joining the MCU

Back in 2022, news broke that Swift would be writing and directing her debut feature film for Searchlight. As a refresher, Searchlight famously brought us The Shape of Water and The Menu among other critically acclaimed films. Said presidents David GreeNBAum and Matthew Greenfield, “Taylor is a once in a generation artist and storyteller. It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey.” While Swift has been busy with the Eras tour, its conclusion could pave the way for her to embark on her directorial debut.

Additionally, news also broke earlier this year that Swift is being considered for a lead role in Blonde Phantom, a Disney+ series that is said to be in development. If Swift were to join the project, it would mark her entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, laying the groundwork for future collaborations.

Sueing Donald Trump

Historically, Republican candidate Donald Trump has never been one of Taylor Swift’s favourite people, and a Twitter post from 2020 is proof positive of that. It is therefore incomprehensible that Trump should be using an AI-generated picture of Swift to mislead Americans into believing that Swift has endorsed him for president in the 2024 US elections — but that’s exactly what he’s done.

A throng of celebrities have spoken up about the Trump campaign’s illegal use of their music, including Beyonce, Celine Dion, The Foo Fighters, and Rihanna among others. The jury’s out on whether Swift will join her peers in striking down the Trump campaign; however, considering her history with AI-generated deepfakes, Swift could very well choose to pursue legal action against the Trump campaign for its illegal use of her likeness.

Dropping Reputation TV

With her re-recorded albums proving to be a success, it’s only a matter of time before Swift completes her revenge era, which presumably concludes with the release of Taylor Swift TV and Reputation TV. While Swifties have long indulged the conspiracy theories surrounding Swift’s eventual release of Reputation TV, details have been sparse on the ground. However, if Swift were to find herself with some time to spare, she may very well surprise us by dropping one of her most highly requested re-records. After all, as Swift herself has said, “There will be no explanation; there will just be Reputation.”

Getting engaged

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are the love story of the decade. This checks out; the romcom-coded couple has received even more media attention than Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Unlike the ill-fated romance of Bennifer, however, Tayvis (or Traylor, or Swelce, depending on which side of the internet you’re on) appears to be going strong.

Kelce has famously joined Swift on many of her international Eras tour concerts, even taking to the stage in one memorable performance of I Can Do It With A Broken Heart. For all intents and purposes, Kelce appears to be a walking green flag who embodies the phrase ‘if he wanted to, he would’. Swifties have noted that he is publicly and loudly supportive, understanding, and proud of his lady’s incredible fame and all that it entails. Most recently, Kelce broke the internet by sending Swift 51 boxes of roses worth USD 31,000 to celebrate the success of the European leg of her Eras tour.

The devotion goes both ways. Despite her Eras tour obligations, Swift has also proven her love with both actions and words. Back in February, Swift, who was performing the Asia leg of her Eras tour, made the news when she raced halfway across the world for the 2024 Super Bowl LVIII. She was present as Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, nabbed the win, and later joined him on the field in a touching moment that brought Swifties and NFL fans alike to tears. Swift has referenced Kelce her work, and it is widely understood that The Alchemy and So High School in The Tortured Poets Department (2024) are about her relationship with him. She has also shouted him out during Eras tour performances of Karma, singing, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me.”

Playing on themes that seem written in the stars, where the world-famous popstar falls in love with the all-American Football star, the Taylor-Travis love story has fans’ hearts in a chokehold. While we’ve not heard news of an engagement, it would not be unreasonable to imagine that wedding bells are on the way. After all, it was on Kelce’s watch that Swift went from ‘And I wouldn’t marry me either / a pathological people pleaser / who only wanted you to see her’ in You’re Losing Me to ‘Are you gonna marry, kiss, or kill me? / It’s just a Game, but really / I’m bettin’ on all three for us two / Get my car door, isn’t that sweet? / Then pull me to the backseat / No one’s ever had me (had me), not like you’ in So High School

So, are Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engaged? Maybe not yet. But are we hoping to see this in the stars for them? Absolutely.

Endorsing Kamala Harris

Taylor Swift has officially endorsed Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for her 2024 presidential campaign. While Swift had initially displayed restraint, choosing to delay her endorsement, her reticence on the matter may be the result of her ongoing Eras tour. In the wake of terror threats in Vienna, Swift’s Eras tour shows in the European city were cancelled, leading to widespread outrage and disappointment. However, Swift drew criticism for her delayed statement, issued after her European leg had fully concluded.

In an Instagram post, Swift shared, “Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”

She went on to add, “Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows. In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that.”

Swift’s statement and the timing of its release is a clear indication of a greater strategy at play. Considering the size of her concerts, which draw tens of thousands every night, Swift may not have wanted to risk more attacks that could have put her fans in harm’s way.

While the same reasoning may have held true for Swift’s delay in officially endorsing Kamala Harris, fans familiar with the political media cycle maintained a different take. With the Democrats currently dominating the news media cycle, it made sense that Swift was waiting for the opportune moment to lend her celebrity star power. And with all eyes on social media in the wake of the 2024 US Presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump on September 10, Swift saw to it that her endorsement would not be missed — and it was not, with the Instagram announcement garnering 6 million likes within 6 hours of its posting. And with an official endorsement now firmly in the bag for the Democratic party, is it possible we could see Swift performing at a Harris-Walz rally?

Loving up on her cats

Taylor Swift has said many iconic things, but one in particular sticks out: “You can’t spell ‘cats’ without TS.” Swift has been open about her love of her three feline companions: Meredith Grey, Olivia Pope, and Benjamin Button, all of whom have appeared with her in music videos and more. While Swift is known to have travelled with her cats in the past, it’s more than likely she’ll enjoy some much-needed kitty cuddle time once the Eras tour has concluded.

Retreating for some much-deserved rest

All things considered, it’s entirely possible (and very probable) that Swift intends to go on an extended hiatus once the Eras tour concludes. Beyond actually needing the down time, Swift, who is known to be a strategic mastermind, is likely aware of the media fatigue surrounding her world-changing tour. And while Swift’s deeply personal connection with her fans has always been regarded as a boon amongst Swifties, critics have called out the unhealthy parasocial nature of the relationship, potentially informing a fall from grace in coming days. Swift has also drawn some criticism, as she has notably abstained from speaking out about the Israel-Palestine conflict. She has also not officially endorsed a candidate for the upcoming 2024 US elections.

While some celebrities prefer to maintain a clear divide between their work and their personal stances on geopolitical coNFLicts, fans have grown increasingly frustrated and disappointed with the silence — Swifties included. The collective argument is that celebrities who possess massive platforms should put them to use, with the counterargument being that celebrities do not owe their fans private information and should not be bullied into speaking up. An extended hiatus would give the news cycle a rest from Taylor Swift fever and help to take the heat off her back.

After giving fans two years of unforgettable experiences as part of the Eras tour, Taylor Swift deserves to rest — no matter how you feel about her silence thus far. We can’t say for certain what the future will hold for Swift, but if one thing is certain, it’s this: true Swifties are not going anywhere.
