What is the asking price for the Boston Celtics? What is Jeff Bezos’ net worth?
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is one of the interested parties in buying NBA team the Boston Celtics, who are expected to be sold by their current ownership group, led by Wyc Grousbeck, later this year or early in 2025.
That’s according to Celtics superfan and NBA media personality Bill Simmons, who has claimed there is “legitimate buzz” about a possible takeover involving the business magnate.
Just a couple of weeks after Boston won the NBA Finals for a record 18th time, news broke at the start of July that their majority ownership group, who purchased the team in 2002, were looking for a way out.
Celtics could become most expensive NBA franchise
According to Simmons, the NBA wants the Celtics to be sold for $6 billion, primarily because it wants that to also be the asking price for future expansion teams in Seattle and Las Vegas.
The most expensive purchase of an NBA franchise to date is the $4 million mortgage executive Mat Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns in 2023. That deal also included the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA.
According to Forbes, the Celtics were worth $4.7 billion at the end of 2023, making them the fourth most valuable NBA franchise behind the Golden State Warriors ($7.7 billion), the New York Knicks ($6.6 billion) and the Los Angeles Lakers ($6.4 billion).
How much is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos worth?
Of course, those figures are merely a drop in the ocean for Bezos. In July 2024, the 60-year-old occupied second place on Forbes’ Real-time Billionaires List with an estimated net worth of $211 billion. He previously topped similar lists between 2017 and 2021.
Would NBA-Amazon agreement prevent Bezos from owning the Celtics?
Just a few weeks ago, the NBA and Amazon announced an 11-year media rights agreement from 2025/26 season. That means Amazon Prime Video will have exclusive worldwide coverage of 66 regular-season NBA Games.
Although Bezos sold $4 billion worth of Amazon shares in February and has stated he plans to sell significantly more next year, he will remain heavily involved with the company.
As it stands, it isn’t clear whether Bezos being the owner of one of the NBA’s main broadcasting partners would be an obstacle to him also owning one of the league’s teams.
