Team USA got off to a strong start on day 1 of the 2024 Solheim Cup, winning the Friday morning foursomes session 3-1, with world No. 1 Nelly Korda leading from the front.

The 26-year-old teamed with Allisen Corpuz to record an opening 3&2 victory over Esther Henseleit and Charley Hull. The top duo were soon followed by Rose Zhang and Lauren Coughlin, who defeated Celine Boutier and Albane Valenzuela, also 3&2.

The bottom contest also went the Americans’ way, with Lilia Vu and rookie Sarah Schmelzel triumphing, again 3&2, over Linn Grant and Carlota Ciganda in a match that looked set to be tight until the USA pulled away on the back nine.

The only bright spot for the Europeans came in match three, where Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark held off Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho. The European pairing were 4up early on but had to withstand a late fightback from the Americans to secure a point.

Team USA or Team Europe: the all-time Solheim Cup record

While Team USA came out on top in five of the first seven Solheim Cups after its foundation in 1990, the tide has turned in recent years. Since triumphing at Rich Harvest Farms in 2009, the United States have lifted the trophy only twice, with their last victory coming in 2017. The Americans won each of the first six editions that took place in the U.S., but since have lost two of the last three, including at Inverness Club in Ohio in 2021.
