What are the ATP rankings after Zverev’s victory at the 2024 Italian Open?
Alexander Zverev’s hard fought 6-4, 7-5 victory over Nicolás Jarry in the Italian Open final was his second win in Rome and his sixth triumph at the 1000 Masters. Three aces for his first three points set Zverev up for a stunning performance to take home the prize money; despite a fight back from his opponent, the 27-year-old was too much on the day.
“It means a lot,†said Zverev after the match. “Obviously winning my first [Masters] title in Rome and winning my first after the injury, Rome is a very special place for me. A very, very special week.â€
“I think his percentage of first serve was pretty high,†Jarry confirmed in the analysis of his opponent after the victory was secured. “I don’t know how much it was, but I felt that I didn’t have enough chances. His service, apart from being very good, is very different from all the other serves. He takes the ball very high, so the bounce is very special. It took me time to get the trajectory of it.â€
Will Zverev overtake Medvedev in the ATP rankings?
Yes, Alexander Zverev will overtake Daniil Medvedev as world No 4 on Monday 20 May when the official ATP rankings are updated.
Will Zverev play at Rolland Garros?
The German’s attention now turns to France, where he will look to go all the way in Europe once again. The timing of this tournament could come as a huge boost for Zverev, as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are both struggling to find form while Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are suffering through their respective fitness issues.
This curious set of circumstances could be seen as something of an alignment of stars for Zverev, and he will go into the incredibly open tournament as one of the hot favourites given his recent success and rich vein of form.
Zverev has had a tough time in the past at the Roland Garros tournament. In the 2022 semi-final he suffered an ankle injury and was forced to drop out, meaning Rafael Nadal was able to reach the final and win the last of his 22 Grand Slams.
“In general it’s always the tournament that I mark down in my calendar,†Zverev said, “This year there’s no exception. That’s the one that I want to win, the one that I look for the most maybe throughout the year. I’m going to do everything I can this year.â€
