A new era has dawned on Anfield. After eight years in charge, Jurgen Klopp opted to leave Liverpool at the end of 2023/24 and left the club in search of a new direction.

The Liverpool hierarchy settled on Arne Slot, the Dutch coach who led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title during his three years in charge. Slot has begun his career in England with back-to-back Premier League wins but he faces a monumental task as the man who replaces a Liverpool legend.

Liverpool secured a third-place finish in Klopp’s final season, ensuring that they return to the Champions League for 2024/25. Historically Liverpool have often fared better in continental competition than they have in the Premier League, and Slot will be looking to continue their proud European record this year.

How many times have Liverpool won the Champions League?

The most successful English team in continental comPetition, Liverpool have been crowned European champions on six occasions. Four of those wins came in the club’s golden era in the 1970s and 1980s, but they have also enjoyed real success more recently.

Liverpool lifted the Champions League under Rafa Benítez in 2004/05 and Jurgen Klopp lead the club to its sixth Champions League title in 2018/19. There have also been a number of near misses, losing finalists in 2006/07, 2017/18 and 2021/22.

The Reds retain many of the key players for their 2018/19 triumph, although some of those Anfield legends may soon be leaving the club. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Djik and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all entering the final year of their contracts, meaning that they would be free to discuss terms with other teams in January.
