The USA’s 2-0 victory over Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League final was unfortunately tainted by homophobic chants and violence in the stands. The Game had to be stopped twice when the Mexican fans would not stop chanting the word “puto”, which translates to the offensive homophobic slur “faggot” in English. The chants were directed at USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner.

After several calls were made over the speakers, the referee Drew Fischer finally paused the Game for almost five minutes. Unfortunately, the chants continued and the Game had to be stopped a second time. The exact same thing happened when these two teams met last year in the Nations League semifinal and the Mexican Football Federation has already been fined many times for this chant. Because of this, the Mexican national team was forced to play their World Cup qualifying home Games behind closed doors in 2021.

Towards the end of the Game, a fan in US colors was dancing in an area of the stands which was surrounded by Mexico supporters, and one of them threw a punch at him, leading to a huge brawl among several fans. Soon, Mexican fans were even fighting among themselves. Drinks were thrown and one American supporter went falling down the bleachers. Even he continued to taunt the other fans as he stood back up. Security was able to take some fans out of the stadium but the USA’s win was unfortunately marred by the events that took place.
