If you know anyone involved in fire fighting then you most likely know that this week is Fire Prevention Week. If you have kids in school you probably heard about it as well.
Many Hudson Valley firehouses are working with schools this week to educate children about fire, its dangers, and how to prevent it. Other organizations have taken this opportunity to share information as well.

Just the other day I was thinking my house doesn't have a fire extinguisher. I used to have one but at this exact moment, I can't recall where it is, maybe the garage? Having a fire extinguisher in your home is a good idea. Fire can happen unexpectedly and being prepared with fire suppression equipment could make a big difference if your house has a fire.

That brings me to something that could cause your house to have a fire and if you are like me you probably would never think of it. It was the Ulster County Government social media post I saw that made me realize a house fire can start in many unsuspecting places.

Your dirty oven causing a fire would not be a surprise. Leaving a fireplace or wood stove without proper service and cleaning could also be an obvious choice. But I have to ask have you ever considered your bathroom fans?
Left uncleaned and poorly maintained they offer a big fire hazard for your home. Just like any other appliance in your home bathroom fans need regular maintenance too.
Ulster County Government Warns of the Danger of Bathroom Exhaust Fans
The Ulster County Government offered some good tips when it comes to preventing a fire in your Bathroom Fan. They suggest among other things that you don't leave the fan on for long periods of time. They suggest replacing your fan with a new one if it is old.
