ISTANBUL:

Authorities in Tokyo have introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered system designed to enhance response times to disasters, such as fires and building collapses.

The system, developed by Hitachi Ltd., utilizes high-altitude cameras to "automatically identify fires and structural collapses" in real-time, according to a report by Tokyo-based Kyodo News on Tuesday.

Once detected, the system promptly relays critical information to the police, fire department, and Japan's self-defense forces, facilitating quicker response efforts.

This initiative comes as Japan remains on high alert due to warnings of a potential "mega" earthquake.

High-resolution cameras have been installed at the Tokyo metropolitan government buildings and various other locations across the city to support the system.
