The Perfect Couple revolves around a seemingly perfect family caught up in a murder mystery and it is only the ending that reveals the actual truth. Let’s dive deep into the events of the last episode of this Netflix drama.

What is the plot of The Perfect Couple?

Greer Winbury, a popular novelist, and her husband Tag are a perfect couple who are in Natucket to celebrate the upcoming nuptials of their second son Benji and his fiance Amelia. Things don’t go as planned when the body of the maid of honour, Merritt, is found floating in the sea and all the main family members and guests turn into suspects. Detective Henry and the local police chief, Dan, come together to find out Merritt’s killer while Greer tries her best to maintain her and the family’s perfect image.

The limited series is directed by Emmy and Oscar winner Susanne Bier, known for The Night Manager (2016) and In a Better World (2010), and is based on Elin Hilderbrand’s New York Times best-selling novel of the same name.

What happens in episode 6 of The Perfect Couple?

The show begins with the wedding party gathered in Winbury’s Nantucket house, Summerland, on the wedding eve. All the characters are introduced in episode 1 which ends with Merritt’s murder turning all the family members and two family friends — Shooter and Isabel — into suspects. Merritt was also pregnant with Tag’s baby when she died. Detective Henry and police chief Dan start their investigation which leads to many secrets being revealed. Throughout the show pretty much everyone acts suspicious and secretive. However, the biggest revelations come in the last episode.

Thomas aka Tom, who has been cheating on his pregnant wife Abby with Isabel, also owes Isabel money and is waiting for his trust fund to be released after his youngest brother, Will, turns 18 to pay her back.

After spending time at the police station answering questions, Greer, who has maintained a persona of the perfect wife and mother, finally reveals that she met Tag while working as an escort. She is “done living a lie!”Additionally, the person who had been calling her continuously was her brother Dominick Graham.

Shooter Dival had lent Greer USD 300,000 but didn’t know what it was for. Greer reveals to the police that she had taken a loan from Shooter to pay off her brother’s debt to a Turkish criminal gang.

During a conversation with her parents, Amelia lets them know that Merritt had barbiturates in her body when she died which leads to her mother, Karen, getting suspicious. Karen is a cancer patient on a lot of medication and had bought three barbiturate pills and one of those is missing. Looks like Tom had stolen one of her pills as part of his pill roulette routine.

This is when the mystery starts to unravel leading the police to finally figure out that it was actually Abby who slipped a mix of pills in a glass of juice to Merritt and then held her head under the water until she drowned. All this so that the trust fund is released as soon as Will turns 18 (in a few weeks) because Thomas and Abby are in debt. If Merritt had kept her baby, it would have been the youngest Winbury leading the trust fund to be reset for another 18 years, and Abby could not let that happen.

The series ends with Greer giving the draft of her new book to Amelia to read as she is the inspiration behind it.

What is Ishaan Khatter’s role in The Perfect Couple?

Khatter plays the role of Shooter Dival, Benji’s best man and a wealthy Indian. He is also like a son to Greer. Eventually, we also get to see that Shooter and Amelia have a connection from the time before she started dating Benji.

The Perfect Couple review

Should you watch this suspense series? Yes, if you are looking for a short series to watch over the weekend and like a decent murder mystery. Nicole Kidman plays the role of the matriarch Greer quite well though she could have done without the blonde wig. Ishaan Khatter also does a good job as Shooter and is definitely easy on the eyes. Overall, it’s a decent watch and will keep you guessing who the murderer is for the better part of the show.

Will there be a season 2?

It is unlikely that there will be a season 2 of The Perfect Couple. It is a limited series that ties up the events very well in the last episode.
