Following an impressive start to life in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers and their quarterback have seen fit to continue together. To that end, it may just be that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2918 NFL Draft has found a space in which he can finally showcase the talent that many believe he has.

Baker Mayfield is the quarterback of choice in Tampa Bay

If reports are to be believed, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is going nowhere. As things stand, the Bucs are signing their 2023 starting signal caller to a three-year deal that could potentially reach $115 million in value, with $50 million of it guaranteed. Mayfield himself confirmed his renewal, saying, “I wanted a chance to come back. I love coach [Todd] Bowles and the staff. I’m happy to be here and I want to win more in the postseason.”

Where specifics are concerned, the contract will see Mayfield earn $30 million in 2024, $30 million in 2025, including $20 million guaranteed and $40 million in 2026. Addtionally, there is also the small sum of $5 million per year in incentives. If you’re not up to speed, Mayfield was by far one of the biggest names on the free-agent market and a player that was coming off a more than credible campaign, with career highs in passing yards (4,044) and touchdowns (28), while throwing just 10 interceptions across a total of 17 Games. Against the odds, Mayfield managed to not only help the Bucs make a postseason trip, but clinch the NFC South title with a 9-8 record as well.

Again, the devil is in the details. With the former Browns QB in the middle, the Bucs put down the then-defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Wild Card Weekend matchup, with Mayfield throwing for 337 yards and three touchdowns in the win. As an aside, that performance was just the third time in NFL History that a quarterback threw for three or more passing touchdowns and had no interceptions in a playoff win for multiple franchises. The only others to do so were Tom Brady and Brett Favre.

As for what awaits the 28-year-old in the coming season, Mayfield will have to work with a new offensive coordinator in the form of Liam Coen, who replaced Dave Canales who in turn was hired by the Carolina Panthers as the team’s new head coach. Of course, that’s not necessarily a bad thing as Coen and Mayfield worked together during their time with the Los Angeles Rams. Indeed, Coen himself admitted that the opportunity to work with Mayfield once more was central to his decision to take the job. Needless to say, the feeling is mutual where the signal-caller is concerned.
