Saudi Arabia investigating Cristiano Ronaldo for obscene gesture to angry fans in the stands
As has become usual when Al Nassr Travel to Saudi Arabian stadiums, Cristiano Ronaldo was greeted, shouted at and ‘hurt’ by chants of “Messi, Messi, Messi”. This weekend it was once again the Portuguese player’s turn to face the chants in favour of the Argentine in a heated Game between Al Shabab and Al Nassr (2-3).
On this occasion, Cristiano did not hold back and responded to the songs with a series of controversial gestures after scoring the first goal of the match. He put his hand to his ear when the home fans shouted Messi’s name before gesturing with his arm in front of his stomach. His usual clashes with rival fans turned the match into a tense affair and it was eventually settled with a double from Talisca. But not before Cristiano responded once again to the provocations.
The Saudi Arabian press reports on Monday said that the Saudi Arabian Football Federation’s Disciplinary Council has opened an investigation into Cristiano Ronaldo for an apparent obscene gesture to the opposing crowd when he scored Al Nassr’s goal. Whether or not the celebratory gesture by the Portuguese is considered obscene remains to be seen.
This is not the first time Cristiano has made headlines in Saudi Arabia for inappropriate gestures. He has been accused of being ‘too comfortable’ in a match after being heckled by fans. He annoyed the Al Hilal crowd after taking a shirt of an opponent and tucking it in his shorts, something deemed disrespectful by fans.
The Portuguese star is beginning to become the epicentre of jeers and boos and everything else in away stadiums across the country. Cristiano is, once again, adored by fans of his team while being utterly hated by the opponents.
