The viewership for Korean Entertainment, particularly K-dramas has been increasing over the last few years.  Apart from streaming platforms like Netflix, the South Korean TV channel Total Variety Network, aka tvN, has been consistent in delivering some of the highest-rated Korean drama shows of all time.

A Southeast Asian premium TV channel managed by CJ Entertainment and Merchandising, a South Korean Entertainment company, tvN unsurprisingly lives up to its slogan “Home of Korean Blockbusters”. Be it a South Korean heiress falling for a North Korean soldier in Crash Landing on You or a couple desperately fighting to save their broken marriage in the channel’s latest, Queen of Tears, there’s something about Korean drama shows from tvN that seems to strike a chord across the world.

Leading the list is Netflix’s ‘must-watch rom-com of the year’, Queen of Tears. With Korean heartthrob Kim Soo-hyun in the leading role, Queen of Tears remains one of the highest-rated tvN drama shows of all time. The series was featured in Netflix’s Top 10 lists in 40+ countries on 10 March 2024. Not just that, it also managed to record a solid 24.850 per cent average nationwide finale viewership rating, reports Nielsen Korea.

Talking about how the heartwarming story of the drama will leave an imprint on the viewers, Kim Soo-hyun said in a 2024 interview with BURO Malaysia, “I was so intrigued by the story surrounding the characters while reading the script. It first started with curiosity and led to anticipation about how this piece would end. It was inevitable for me to take part in this piece because of this curiosity. I think viewers will also feel the curiosity, questions, touching moments and love that I felt.”

Meanwhile, blending romance with action is the Lee Jung-hyo directorial Crash Landing on You (CLOY). Another highest-rated Korean drama show on tvN, this 2019 romance won hearts globally with its intriguing plot about cross-border coNFLicts and forbidden love. With a 98 per cent Rotten Tomatoes rating, CLOY also makes for the second highest-rated cable drama in South Korea. This Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin starrer also recorded a nationwide average viewership of 21.7 per cent and over 6.3 million views, according to Nielsen Korea.
