Eagles beat Packers in São Paulo
Eagles defeat Packers in São Paulo thriller
Wow, what a night of football in Brazil! This game had it all.
It was a successful first game in South America, with the two teams meeting in Arena Corinthians stadium in São Paulo, Brazil The crowd brought the energy and the teams delivered the show.
Packers and Eagles offensive battle
It was a back-and-forth battle for the entire Game with no clear winner until the very last seconds when the Eagles finally won 34-29. The Packers and Eagles traded off field goals and touchdowns throughout the Game.
For the Packers, wide receiver Jayden Reed led the scores, finishing with two touchdowns, one for 34 yards and one for 70 yards. Wide receiver Christian Watson also made a touchdown.
For the Eagles, it was former Giants running back Saquon Barkley who had the biggest day, finishing with 24 carries for 109 yards and two rushing touchdowns, plus two receptions for 23 yards and one touchdown catch. Wide receiver A.J. Brown also made a 67-yard touchdown catch.
Slip-n-slide
It's not really clear why, but theplayers on both teams were slipping and sliding all over the soccer field. The turf is a hybrid one, which is the same kind that the Packers and Eagles both use at home, but it must have been more slippery than they're used to because they were struggling to stand the whole game, though they did start to get the hang of it a bit better in the second half after changing their cleats.

We're just about ready for the first dynamic kickoff of the game!
With Kelce gone, can Philly still pull off the tush push?
Jason Kelce was the Eagles' center for 13 seasons and became an expert at the brotherly shove last season. Now that he's announced his retirement and they'll be without him for the first time in years, Philly will face the Packers with Cam Jurgens at center.
While Kelce was an important factor in the tush push, QB Jalen Hurts was equally important and should still be able to pull off the move with Jurgens, as long as he can get the same kind of momentum that Kelce was able to generate. Will he? Time will tell.
What to expect from the Eagles offense?
The Eagles have a new offensive coordinator in Kellen Moore, but it's still a bit of a mystery as to what exactly that will look like.
The Eagles have a talented offense across the board, and tonight we'll get to see how well they play under Moore for the first time.
Who is Ronika Stone, Jordan Love’s fiancee?
Meet Ronika Stone - the 6'2" fiancé of Packers quarterback Jordan Love
Eagles starting fresh
The Eagles had a devastating end to the season last year. After a stellar start, they completely collapsed towards the end of the season, giving up the NFC East title to the Dallas Cowboys and ending the year in a Wild Card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
To start this year though, the Eagles brought on former Giants running back Saquon Barkley. With quarterback Jalen Hurts, star wide receivers A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith, Barkley joins a highly talented group of offensive players.
How will the Packers' new-look defense fare?
The Packers are feeling positive this season after defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, along with his defensive style, has joined the team.
The Green Bay defense is also bolstered by safeties Xavier McKinney and rookies JavonBullard and EvanWilliams.
They've also got their two cornerbacks Eric Stokes and Jaire Alexander healthy at the same time. Tonight will be just their third start together in 29 games.
While there has been a lot of optimism surrounding this new defense, it will be put to the test tonight as they face the Eagles' challenging receiving corps headlined by wide receiver A.J. Brown.
Weather in São Paulo
In Brazil, the seasons are the opposite of the U.S. seasons. So winter is just finishing up and they're heading into spring.
Still, throughout most of the country, the weather is quite mild year-round without ever dipping too cold. For tonight's Eagles-Packers game in São Paulo, it's a beautiful 64 degrees, feeling very much like a fall football night in America!
Brazil bans X
Brazil recently enacted a nationwide ban on X, formerly Twitter, and that includes visitors to the country.
Obviously, this presents an obstacle for sports reporters in Brazil for the Eagles-Packers game, as X is one of the only social media platforms that allows for simple, real-time updates and reactions.
So what many reporters are doing is relaying the information back to people in the U.S. and having them provide the updates on X. Some of those doing so are the wives and children of the reporters.
The ban on X came about after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes demanded that seven right-wing accounts be removed for posting misinformation about former president Jair Bolsonaro. Elon Musk refused to do so, despite having done so for other countries like Turkey and India. After threatening the takedown and shutting down the Brazilian offices, the platform was banned altogether.

Concerns in Brazil
Although the energy and excitement about the game in Brazil is high, there have also been some concerns about security.
Brazil can be a dangerous place - it is ranked the 17th most dangerous country in the world by murder rate. It is ranked below Mexico, where the NFL has held games four times.
So, as a safety precaution, the players were warned not to do certain things like walk outside with their phone in their hand. While this is something that most U.S. Americans would do without thinking, there are several countries where that's just a bad idea, even some of the safe ones. This sort of warning came as a shock to some players, including Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, who said on his podcast that he didn't even want to go to Brazil anymore.
“They already told us not to leave the hotel. They told us we can’t do too much going on because the crime rate is crazy,” said Slay.
After some backlash, Slay has apologized to the Brazilian people in a post on X:
"I want to apologize to anyone I offended, that wasn’t my intention. I’m Looking forward to playing in your beautiful country and i’ve heard yall are very passionate just like our amazing Eagles fan. Just a few more days, can’t wait!!!!"
The São Paulo state government has said they will be providing extra security for the Packers and Eagles teams.
“Our policing will be beefed up during the week to secure the public’s safety for this historic match, with officers on the streets and avenues around the stadium, in public transportation, in the hotels and in tourist areas of the city,” the security secretariat said.
The "green ban" in Arena Corinthians
Let's talk about this stadium! Home to São Paulo's soccer team Corinthians, the Eagles and Packers will play in the Arena Corinthians, also known as Neo Química Arena. I'm not sure if you're familiar, but the soccer fans in Brazil are pretty intense about their sport.
The Corinthians supporters are so serious about their team thatthey will fine any player who wears the color green, as it's the color of their long-time rival, Palmeiras.
As you probably know, the Eagles and Packers both have green as their main colors. And though it's the Eagles who would typically wear green as the hosts, they've instead chosen to get into the good graces of the Corinthians fans and respect the traditions of the stadium, choosing to wear white and black - the colors of the Corinthians soccer team itself.
The Packers, on the other hand, will be wearing their green and yellow jerseys, similar to the Brazilian flag.
As for the Palmeiras supporters, they'll be using this as a chance to go into the stadium proudly donning green. It seems we may see the creation of some new Philly and Packers fans tonight.
NFL INTERNATIONAL SERIES
Eagles vs Packers in Brazil: Who is the home team and why?
The Philadelphia Eagles are considered the home team in tonight's game in Brazil, while the Green Bay Packers are considered the away team. With all of the international games the league is doing these days, they had to come up with a method for who's "home" and who's "away".
Here's how the league determines the home team, what that even means in an international game, and why the Eagles were chosen as the hosts over the Packers.
A historic experience in Brazil
What an exciting night of football we have ahead of us! Not only is this game the first time the league has held an opening weekend game on a Friday in over 50 years, but it's also the first time the league has brought a game to South America, let alone Brazil!
The NFL International Series is the league's way of trying to spread the game across the globe, and it works. Since bringing the first game to London in 2007, the interest in the UK has spiked significantly. It's also a way for those who are already fans to have a chance to attend a game in their own country.
In fact, the sport is already quite popular in Brazil with NFL.com siting that there are 38 million fans in the country.
Welcome!
