Opinion – Latest Celtic Contract Update is as Positive as it is Critical
If reports are to be believed, Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston could soon sign a new bumper contract with the club.
The Scottish Premiership champions want to bring the Canadian in line with its top earners and extend his current deal, which expires in three years.
Fans should be greatly encouraged by this news because Johnston has been a key performer this season.
He was inconsistent last term, but after a sensational Copa America, in which he was given a team of the tournament inclusion, he has improved dramatically.
He has finally found his feet under Brendan Rodgers and has been the best right-back in Scotland so far this campaign.
The 25-year-old marauds up and down the right-hand side with ease, remaining solid defensively and proving a dangerous force in attack.
His numbers back up such a stance. Indeed, Johnston has scored one and assisted another in four league appearances this term while also keeping four consecutive clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership.
The club rewarding his performances with a new and improved deal is as positive as it is critical.
Along with the likes of Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor, and Cameron Carter-Vickers, the defender is a key voice in the dressing room.
Brendan Rodgers said Celtic isn’t the end Game for some players, but for Johnston, it certainly looks like it could be.
