Kasper Schmeichel Explains Reasoning Behind First-Half Huddle After CCV Own Goal
Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel put in yet another impressive Champions League performance for the Hoops, but it wasn’t his goalkeeping that stole the show tonight.
After conceding an own goal due to a miscommunication between Cameron Carter-Vickers and himself, Schmeichel made sure to bring the team together to discuss the incident and why they were 1-0 down in a first 25 minutes where the Hoops were on the back foot against Club Brugge.
The Dane revealed the thinking behind his decision and highlighted where he thought things went wrong in the lead-up to the goal.
He said: (TNT Sports),”I think it’s important when things aren’t going well, anytime there’s a chance in the Game, you just reset mentally and say, We’re getting caught too often in a mid-block. Either we go and press high, or we stay in and defend.
“They were having too much time on the ball, too much joy. So it’s important for us to shore things up and get to halftime.”
It was a huge moment from Schmeichel, showcasing just how much of a leader he is.
With over 18 years of experience as a professional goalkeeper, he knows exactly what to do in moments where others might shy away.
The Celtic goalkeeper demonstrated why he has proved such an inspired summer signing on a free transfer.
His awareness of what the team was doing wrong proved invaluable, as he possesses the unique ability to participate in the Game while also observing when the ball is further up the pitch.
Schmeichel brought an insight that no other Celtic player could provide, a clear indication that Brendan Rodgers knew exactly what he was getting when he signed him in the summer, having previously worked together at Leicester City.
