With two wins from their last three Premier League meetings with Saturday's opponent, Newcastle will be hoping that the visit of Arsenal to St. James' Park allows them to kickstart a league campaign that has not really got going so far. Defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League might have been avenged in the EFL Cup but moored in 12th, Eddie Howe's men have work to do if they are to push towards the European places.

Team news

Newcastle: The Magpies' chances could well pivot on the outcome of late fitness tests for star forwards Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. Howe said on Friday that both players are "feeling ok" and it would be a surprise to not see at least one of the two in the XI. Jacob Murphy's availability is more doubtful but Newcastle might feel that the injury crisis that engulfed them last season is not what it once was.

"The injury list is still not perfect but certainly better than at times last year," said Howe. "Every Game is very difficult. Chelsea still put out an exceptional team on Wednesday. This is a Premier League Game, a different test. They have their qualities, they have a really solid look about the team. Very good from set plays and a solid team and we have to be prepared for that test."

Possible Newcastle XI: Pope; Livramento, Schar, Kelly, Hall; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Tonali; Gordon, Isak, Willock

Arsenal: Another side whose injury issues are abating somewhat with Gabriel's knee knock against Liverpool not quite as bad as feared. He should be available to take his place alongside William Saliba in the heart of the backline and, though Riccardo Calafiori is missing until after the international break, Thomas Partey and Jurrien Timber proved themselves to be solid options at full back. Ben White trained on Friday after missing the EFL Cup win at Preston and could also be in contention.

Martin Odegaard has been ruled out by Mikel Arteta but the trip to Inter may not be beyond him. "Now is the stage when he will do certain work with us," said Arteta. "Let's see how he deals with pain, if he moves naturally enough, if he is physically now at the level that requires him to comPete. But with the workrate and the hours he's put in, I would be surprised that the moment he starts training with us, we don't say that he looks ready. So hopefully soon."

Possible Arsenal XI: Raya; Partey, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber; Rice, Merino; Saka, Havertz, Trossard, Martinelli

Prediction

If Arsenal can keep themselves fit and at their full compliment of 11, they should have enough to win this. PICK: Newcastle 1, Arsenal 2
