Four weeks of the 2023 college football season are in the books. It has certainly been an entertaining year so far, and an awesome Week 4 lineup delivered the goods even though Colorado vs Oregon was a dud. Ohio State’s win at Notre Dame was wildly entertaining, while Florida State needed overtime to get past Clemson.

Now it’s time to turn our attention to Week 5. This slate isn’t quite as strong as this past weekend’s, especially now that Colorado has tumbled out of the top 25. Still, it includes an all-ranked showdown on Friday night between Utah and Oregon State before Saturday’s lineup is headlined in part by LSU vs Ole Miss. The opening lines were released at most Sportsbooks on Sunday, so let’s take a look at these openers and give our first impressions.

Best early bets for NCAAF Week 5

Georgia -14.5 (-110) over Auburn

Although this is over the key number of 14, it really should be over the key number 17…if not more. Georgia has not gotten into top gear yet this season, but that hasn’t been necessary. This is the Bulldogs’ first SEC road test of the season and I expect them to get up for a rivalry game – even if Auburn stinks. The Tigers are coming off a bad 27-10 loss to an unspectacular Texas A&M squad, during which they passed for a grand total of 56 yards. UGA’s offense woke up this past weekend and there have never been any questions about the defense, so this should be an absolute blowout in favor of the #1 team and defending national champ.

Notre Dame -5 (-110) vs Duke

Notre Dame arguably should have beaten Ohio State on Saturday night. A 17-14 loss will be tough to swallow, but I expect the Fighting Irish to use it as motivation and come out like gangbusters this weekend. Even with 1 loss, there is still all to play for when it comes to head coach Marcus Freeman’s program. The defense is great and it’s only a matter of time before Sam Hartman gets back on track. You have to give Duke credit for being 4-0, but I’m not convinced this is the #17 team in the nation. Give me Notre Dame by a touchdown.

West Virginia +9.5 (-110) over TCU

TCU’s season-opening 45-42 setback against Colorado now looks real bad. The Horned Frogs have won 3 in a row since that result, but they have not had to face anyone good. West Virginia may not be amazing, but it is also riding a 3-game winning streak and this stretch includes a 17-6 drubbing of Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers have allowed just 36 total points over the past 3 contests. If their defense continues to perform at this level, they should be able to keep Saturday’s margin within the number. Of course, it may be advisable to wait and see if you can get it at +10 or higher.
