Detroit Tigers vs Los Angeles Angels: NRFI (-120)

The Los Angeles Angels have scored 5 fewer runs than every other ballclub in the month of September and news struck down yesterday that two-way star Shohei Ohtani will be shut down for the remainder of the season after an MRI revealed irritation in his right oblique. This injury comes on the heels of Ohtani ending his season as a pitcher due to a torn UCL. Los Angeles is plagued with injuries and will likely be without Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon the rest of the season as well. It’s hard to get behind a lineup lacking most of their star power, and I believe they continue to struggle at the plate.

They’ll be going up against 28-year-old right-hander Miguel Diaz, who’s only made 6 appearances and pitched just 5.2 innings this season, but he’s yet to allow a run. I think Diaz can deliver another scoreless inning this afternoon as he’s seemingly had no issues thus far. Diaz has walked just 1 batter while striking out 8 and hasn’t thrown more than 16 pitches in an inning. Look for Diaz to go right after this Angels’ lineup. Left-hander Reid Detmers counters for the Angels and makes his 27th start with a 4.77 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. While the numbers aren’t overwhelming, Detmers has had more success in the first inning (3.81 ERA) than in any other inning this season and faces a Tigers’ lineup that lacks power. Detroit ranks 25th in the MLB with 150 home runs, and aside from Spencer Torkelson (28 home runs), the top of the lineup doesn’t provide a ton of pop. I like a scoreless first in Los Angeles.

Chicago Cubs vs Arizona Diamondbacks: YRFI (-125)

For my second pick, we head over to Phoenix for another edition of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. The Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks are wrapped up in a tight NL Wild Card race, with a single game separating the Cubs, D-backs, Reds, and Marlins for the last 2 spots, with the Philadelphia Phillies holding a 3.5 game lead over the Cubs. The D-backs won the first 2 games of the series, while Chicago has now dropped their last 4 and are on the verge of being on the outside looking in. The Cubs turn to recent callup, Jordan Wicks who’s made an immediate impact despite just 4 starts. Chicago won all 4 games Wicks started and he’s pitching to a 1.99 ERA across 17.2 innings. I’m expecting Wicks to find success, but I’m hesitant to say the same for Arizona starter Ryne Nelson.

In his last outing, Nelson surrendered 6 earned runs on 7 hits, 2 home runs, and 2 walks in just 4.1 innings of work against the New York Mets. For Nelson, he’s now given up 6 earned runs in 3 of his last 4 starts. On the season, Nelson is pitching to 5.53 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and opposing lineups are hitting .292. The season hasn’t exactly gone the way Nelson would like, and his 5.46 xERA suggests he hasn’t experienced a great deal of bad luck. The Cubs have been consistent offensively all season long and I could see them striking first in this game. Back over 0.5 runs in the first inning in Arizona.
