San Diego Padres vs Oakland Athletics: YRFI (-125)
Our first game takes us to the Oakland Coliseum where the Athletics look to rebound from an 8-3 loss to the San Diego Padres yesterday. The Padres didn’t hesitate to score yesterday and got on the board in the top of the first after a solo home run from Fernando Tatis Jr. and a wild pitch from Sean Newcomb brought Juan Soto home. The Padres are hitting .262 in September, which is 22 points higher than their .241 season average, and they’ve scored 27 runs across their last 4 games. I think they will stay hot at the plate, especially against a young, inexperienced starter in Mason Miller for the A’s. Miller has pitched quite well given a small sample size of just 25.1 innings with a 2.84 ERA, but he found himself in a lot of deep counts his last time out, throwing 45 pitches in 2.0 innings despite allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk. The Padres should be patient at the plate and force Miller to work.
The Padres counter with a young, inexperienced pitcher themselves when Matt Waldron takes the mound for his 6th Major League appearance. Although Waldron has thrown a total of only 24.1 innings, he’s been touched up on numerous instances. Waldron is pitching to a 5.55 ERA and has already given up 24 hits and at least 1 home run in each of his appearances for a total of 6. The Athletics are by no means an offensive juggernaut, but they should be able to find a degree of success against a pitcher with a 12.2% barrel rate and 6.06 xERA. For this Game, I’m going to back the Padres’ lineup to stay hot while fading two young pitchers without a ton of MLB innings under their belts.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Seattle Mariners: NRFI (-115)
We’ll go for a sleepy first inning in Seattle, where the Dodgers are on the verge of another NL West division title and the Mariners continue to battle for either the AL West crown or a wild-card place. The Dodgers took the first game of the series last night, but neither team got on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth. Tonight, while I’m not sure we’ll get 7 scoreless frames to begin the ballgame, it’s very possible we will get 2. Bryce Miller takes the ball for Seattle, making his 23rd start of the season while pitching to a 4.05 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. The rookie has been a reliable arm for the Mariners this season, and more often than not he has started out strongly. The first inning has been his best, as he’s pitched to a 2.86 ERA with opposing lineups hitting .210. The Dodgers’ lineup is certainly dangerous, but I’m going to back Miller and the fact that the 3 first-inning runs he gave up to Tampa Bay in his last start were the only first-inning runs he’s given up in his last 12 starts.
Speaking of early success, future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw proves that anything you can do, I can do better. Over his last 12 outings, Kershaw has allowed just 1 first-inning run and owns a 2.14 first-inning ERA across 21 starts this season. On the year, Kershaw is pitching to a 2.61 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and is looking as dominant on the mound as ever. Kershaw has yet to pitch against Seattle this season, and it’ll be his first time going up against Julio Rodriguez, who has completely turned his season around after hitting .389 since the start of August. Although Rodriguez has been red hot, I’m going to back the veteran to navigate through the lineup and deliver another scoreless first inning. Back Miller and Kershaw to remain effective and side with a scoreless first inning in Seattle.
