Monday Night Football has a doubleheader tonight, but don’t forget about baseball! There are only 2 weeks left in the regular season and we have some exciting matchups to start this week. The Orioles travel to Houston to face the Astros, the Red Sox head to Texas to battle the Rangers and the Phillies travel to Atlanta to take on the Braves. Milwaukee Brewers -2.5 (+130) over St. Louis Cardinals

Adam Wainwright had one of his best outings of the season last week in Baltimore. If you were like me, you might expect that the surging Orioles offense full of young and talented hitters would hit Wainwright early and often. However, nearly the exact opposite happened. The 42-year-old had a no-hitter after 4 innings and was baffling everybody. He ended up allowing 2 runs in 5 innings, but for a pitcher that ranks in the 1st percentile in almost every category – I expected far worse. But he matches up against Freddy Peralta on Monday, and this is a mismatch for the ages.

Peralta is part of Milwaukee’s 3-headed pitching monster made up of Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and himself. It’s one of the best pitching trios in all of baseball, and Peralta is the best strikeout pitcher of the three. He ranks in the 93rd percentile in strikeout rate and 92nd percentile in whiff rate which is mostly due to his incredible slider and changeup. He will face a Cardinals offense that has underperformed all season long, and they are just two weeks away from their season coming to an end. The Brewers lineup should be able to score several runs off of Wainwright while Peralta should shut down the St. Louis offense, so I’m expecting a big win for the home team.

Boston Red Sox vs Texas Rangers Under 7.5 (+126)

The series opener in Arlington features an underrated pitching matchup between Kutter Crawford and Jordan Montgomery. I say underrated because Crawford isn’t exactly a household name, but he has been solid for the Red Sox this season. He has his moments of struggles when he can’t get chases on his offspeed pitches which can lead to a lot of walks. However, when he’s on, he’s been an exceptional arm. In his most recent start against the Yankees, he went 4.2 innings and surrendered just 1 run and 3 hits while striking out 7. Three walks drove up his pitch count which is why he couldn’t finish 5 innings, but I don’t expect many free passes on Monday night since the Rangers like to swing early in the count.

Jordan Montgomery was my favorite trade deadline acquisition. In my opinion, he is very underrated and has exceeded expectations since joining the Rangers. He’s allowed 2 runs or less in 5 of his last 8 starts, and one of those outings was his most recent start which featured 7 scoreless innings and just 4 hits allowed to the Blue Jays. The lefty will face a Red Sox lineup that will be without Triston Casas, who has been their best hitter in the second half of the season. Between these two starters, I like the chances of a low-scoring Game.

Houston Astros -1.5 (+134) over Baltimore Orioles

Last night, the Orioles clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2016. Baltimore split a 4-game series with the Rays which was all they needed to clinch a postseason appearance. But now, their goal is to win the AL East. The Rays are still just a game back, so the Orioles need to rack up as many wins as they can in the last 2 weeks. However, that might be tough against the reigning American League champs. The Astros have come to life in the last two months, and they will have Justin Verlander on the mound for the series opener. The reigning AL Cy Young will take on an Orioles lineup that was red-hot to start September but has scored 3 or fewer runs in 4 of their last 6 games.

After 16 months away from the game, John Means finally returned last week. He made his season debut against the Cardinals and surrendered 3 runs, 5 hits and 2 home runs in 5 innings of work. The lefty didn’t walk any hitters, as his problem seemed to be throwing too many strikes and not working the corners too well. Means is an excellent pitcher and will be able to help the Orioles in the postseason, but I’m being very cautious about backing him in his first few starts back. I’ll back the home team for a multi-run win.
