Miami, soccer capital of the world
FIFA President Gianni Infantino made a significant announcement in Miami this Monday, revealing a new collaboration with Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
“I am very proud to announce this FIFA collaboration with Miami Dade College. We will celebrate... this iconic place, the city of Miami. And we’ll do it with an exhibit from the FIFA Museum located in Zurich,” Infantino said.
The head of the world’s governing body for soccer noted that this exhibit will be open from next year and promised it would be spectacular. “All fans who come to see Inter Miami, to see Messi, will also visit the Miami College Museum, where we will tell the story of the most fantastic sport.”
Additionally, it was announced that Miami Dade College will form its first women’s team in partnership with FIFA, offering scholarships to some students to visit FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich.
Since Lionel Messi’s arrival, Miami has become one of the most soccer-enthusiastic cities in the United States and is even gearing up to be the soccer capital. The Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, will host the Copa America final this year, on Sunday, July 14, and will also be a venue for the 2026 World Cup.
Why did FIFA pick Miami?
Regarding the decision to partner with Miami Dade College, Infantino explained: “Miami is special. It’s a city open to the world. We are organizing the 2026 World Cup here in North America: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. It is a global soccer capital today and with FIFA’s presence, it will become even more significant. With Inter Miami, they already have a hugely iconic team with Jorge Mas, Beckham, Messi, and all the players,” Infantino remarked.
Finally, Infantino was asked about his relationship with Messi and the level of play he’s shown at Inter Miami, to which he responded, “He’s playing very well, he’s a great player and as the president of FIFA, it was an honor to present him with the World Cup in Qatar almost 2 years ago.”
