The Dallas Mavericks were beaten by the Los Angeles Clippers in game 1 of the first-round series between the teams on Sunday, despite the best efforts of Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic, who was the game’s top scorer with 33 points.

The five-time NBA All-Star, who is one of the three contenders to be named MVP this season, tops a number of the league’s key metrics for 2023/24 and also gave his playoff statistics a boost despite the Mavs’ defeat in Los Angeles. In addition to his 33-point haul, Doncic bagged 13 rebounds, bumping up his overall numbers in both categories.

The former Real Madrid star has now played 29 playoff Games since joining Dallas on 2018, more than half of which came in their run to Conference finals in 2021/22.

Last year, the Mavericks surprisingly missed out on the playoffs altogether, with this the fourth season out of six in which Doncic has been involved in the postseason action. They have been eliminated in the first round twice since “Luka Magic” moved stateside.

Doncic’s performance against the Clippers took him up to 9.4 rebounds per game in the playoffs, which leaves him behind a number of his contemporaries in postseason history, including Nikola Jokic (12.17), Giannis Antetokoumpo (11.97), Anthony Davis (11.44) and Rudy Gobert (11.44).

Although he didn’t improve his assists stats on Sunday, managing six against a career average of 7.8, the Mavericks point guard is nevertheless at No. 16 in the all-time top 20, headed by Magic Johnson (12.35).

Russell Westbrook (7.82), who he came up against at the weekend, is one of the players ahead of him, which also includes former Clippers star John Wall (third, 9.84) and Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young (fourth, 9.00).

He also leads the way for most points scored in a single Game, bagging 73 in the win over the Hawks in January.

Wilt Chamberlain holds that particular record and remains the only player to score 100 points in a game in the Philadelphia Warriors’ win over the New York Knicks in 1962.
