Aidan Hutchinson suffred horrific injury

The Lions defensive end and NFL leader in sacks had just notched his second sack on Prescott (making 8.5 on the season) when he suffered a horrific injury to his leg.

FOX didn't show a replay as the leg had clearly bent in a way that looked quite gruesome. Hutchinson was down on the field for quite some time before his leg was finally stabilized in an air cast and he was carted off the field.

After the game, it was reported that Hutchinson has a broken tibia and immediately underwent surgery at a Dallas hospital. He will likely be out for the rest of the season. He was on track to win Defensive Player of the Year.

The Lions were relentless and the Cowboys were miserable.

The Lions got another chance when Dallas turned it over and a slew of big runs took them near the red zone but not near enough. Cowboys defense held them to a field goal and Bates made the 40-yard try to extend the Lions' lead with 13:28 left in the 2nd quarter.

They've been using those star running backs to move up the field and are now at 1st down at the Cowboys 22.

Not only are the Lions well-rested after coming off a bye week, but in their last win over the Seattle Seahawks, quarterback Jared Goff had a perfect game, going 18 of 18 for 292 yards and two touchdowns. 

He even made NFL history by becoming the only player to throw multiple touchdowns, have a perfect completion percentage, AND catch a touchdown in the same game (Goff caught a TD pass from WR Amon-Ra St. Brown on a trick play).

He'll be looking to bring that same energy today against the banged-up Dallas defense.

Aidan Hutchison the man to get past

Lions pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson is the NFL leader in sacks with 6.5, even with Detroit's early bye week. On top of that, he's notched 23 pressures and 14 quarterback hits.

Last week, the Cowboys gad to get past T.J. Watt. This week, Hutchinson is the challenge. An injury to left tackle Tyler Guyton caused to make some changes on the o-line that actually turned out to work in Dallas' favor. They moved Tyler Smith to tackle and T.J. Bass to guard. With those changes, plus center Cooper Beebe, guard Zack Martin, and right tackle Terence Steele on the o-line, quarterback Dak Prescott was under a lot less pressure to throw fast. They have to do that again today if they want to protect Prescott from the formidable Hutchinson.

Cowboys vs Lions INACTIVES

As I've mentioned a few times already, the Cowboys are dealing with a ton of injuries, particularly on defense. While owner Jerry Jones offered a sliver of hope that edge rusher Micah Parsons could return, it was never a likely possibility considering the bye week coming up after this week. 

Unfortunately, after a bit of hope that cornerback DaRonBland might finally come off injured reserve this week, he was not activated in the end.

Cowboys' struggles to stop the run...

The Cowboys have slightly improved in their run defense in the last two games, but that's not saying much as they still rank 24th in the league, allowing 135 yards per game. That's not good considering the Lions have not one but two Top 20 rushers with Jahmyr Gibbs (285 yards) and David Montgomery (271 yards).

Without Parsons, Lawrence, Kneeland, and Eric Kendricks, that's going to be an even bigger problem for Dallas.

The Lewis-St. Brown drama

The penalty controversy isn't the only thing the Lions remember well from their last game against the Cowboys. Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown spoke on “The Pivot Podcast" back in July and said that Cowboys CB Jourdan Lewis was talking some serious trash.

“He was talking crazy,” St. Brown said. “Some (stuff) I’ve never heard.”

This week, Lewis only added fuel to the fire.

“I just remember him going on a podcast trying to air me out,” Lewis said. “We're going to play each other, so we're going to see each other and we're going to have a Game together. We're going to see what's real and what's not."

St. Brown's response: “Yeah, typically don’t get too involved. I might say something back a little, but for the most part, it fires me up, gets me going. So, I love it.”

Injuries galore for the Cowboys

The Cowboys are without SIX starters for today's game against the Lions, including five on defense.

Dallas was able to defeat the Steelers despite an already depleted defense, which became even more so during the game when Parsons and Lawrence left with injuries. They had three sacks and eight QB hits. 

This week, they'll have to find a way to put that pressure on Jared Goff, even without their starters. Goff has only been sacked seven times in four games this season. Still in for Dallas are Carl Lawson, Linval Joseph, Mazi Smith, and Osa Odighizuwa.

Lions out for revenge after last year?

Interestingly, the Cowboys' last home win was actually against the Lions in Week 17 of the 2023 season. It was a controversial 20-19 victory after the Lions had a 2-point conversion called bac by an illegal touching penalty on left tackle Taylor Decker. 

The Lions proceeded to fail on two more 2-point attempts, one of which was intercepted by Dallas but nullified due to an offsides penalty on the Cowboys. They then tried for an onside kick but it was recovered by Dallas.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has said he still has "controlled fury" inside him due to that loss.

The 3-2 Cowboys are coming off a thrilling road victory over the Steelers last week but, very much unlike last year, have yet to get a win at home.

The 3-1 Lions are fresh off a bye week and their last game was a 42-29 win over the Seahawks, during which QB Jared Goff had a perfect game of 18/18 for 292 yards and two touchdowns.
