Lionel Scaloni outlines Argentina’s plan without injured Lionel Messi
After more than three months away, Lionel Messi is set to make his long-awaited return for Inter Miami next weekend.
The 37-year-old spent much of June and July on international duty at Copa América with Argentina, but suffered an ankle injury in the final against Colombia. Messi was not fit to be called up to the Argentina side for the September internationals, something that has forced the world champions to rethink their attacking structure.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni explained: “It is difficult for a team not to depend on Messi in Football terms because he is a unique player.”
He continued: “But this team has an idea of the Game regardless of who plays. They all play the same way. That helps. When Leo is not here we do the same thing without the finishing touch he has.”
When will Lionel Messi return for Argentina?
Argentina made light work of their first Game without Lionel Messi, beating Chile 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Alexis Mac Allister, Julián Alvarez and Paulo Dybala were on the scoresheet for Scaloni’s side as they opened up a four-point lead at the top of the qualification standings. Next up, a trip to Colombia; another Game that Messi will not be involved in.
Nevertheless, Messi remains a key part of the Argentina squad and could still be involved for the next World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The next FIFA international date comes in mid-October, meaning that nations will soon have to submit their rosters. Scaloni is hoping that Messi can be involved.
“We are waiting for Messi to start playing. When we have to give the next list we will communicate with everyone and he will be no exception. This will be in about two weeks. After that we will see if he is fit.”
Barring an injury setback, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami return looks likely for Saturday’s MLS clash against Philadelphia Union. Messi has made just 12 MLS appearances for Inter Miami so far this year but has been at his sparkling best when available. He’s already recorded 12 goals and nine assists, one goal involvement every 49 minutes. His return could turbo-charge the Herons as they head into the post-season.
