The Los Angeles Clippers today unveiled the franchise’s new brand look, as the NBA team prepares to move into the $2bn Intuit Dome later this year.

Clippers rebrand inspired by “past and future”

The Californian franchise has revealed an updated team logo, a redesigned court and new playing uniforms - all of which seek to pay homage to the organisation’s early years in San Diego, a port city with a rich maritime heritage.

“Embracing our maritime roots in a modern design, we take inspiration from past and future as we embark on a new era at Intuit Dome,” the Clippers said.

Before relocating to Los Angeles in 1984, the Clippers spent six years in San Diego, having moved to California from Buffalo. Initially known as the Braves, the franchise took on its Clippers nickname on arrival in San Diego.

“San Diego team officials didn’t think Braves was a representative nickname for the club,” the team explains on its website. “A contest decided on Clippers because the city was known for the great sailing ships that passed through San Diego Bay.”

What does Clippers’ new logo look like?

The team’s new logo features a capital ‘C’ surrounding the hull of a ship, on which the seams of a basketball are also visible. The ‘global’ version of the logo also includes a compass, plus the team’s name in a font “inspired by naval typography”.

To be worn next season, the Clippers’ new uniforms come in a familiar, naval colourway of blue, white and red. They feature a Pacific blue trim which, according to the franchise, represents “the horizon line of the ocean”.

The Clippers’ 2024/25 uniforms include the red ‘Statement Edition’, which has elements of nautical flags running along the jersey’s side panels.

The naval-inspired font used on the logo and uniforms is also present in the design of the playing surface that will be installed inside Intuit Dome.

Located in Inglewood, California, the 18,000-seat arena is due to be opened this year, with the Clippers moving in for the 2024/25 NBA campaign. The team currently shares Crypto.com Arena, located in downtown Los Angeles, with the LA Lakers.

“Bedrocks of our past and our future”

We have been on a long journey, gathering feedback and insights from across Clipper Nation,” Gillian Zucker, president of Business operations for the Clippers and Intuit Dome, said.

“We listened to as many voices as we could and then engaged specialists to arrive at a timeless design that blends bedrocks of our past and our future. Our new marks are meaningful and strong, capturing our roots and our aspirations.”

Clippers on course for 23/24 postseason

Under head coach Tyronn Lue, the 37-19 Clippers sit fourth in the 2023/24 Western Conference standings, as they bid to qualify for the NBA playoffs for the 11th time in the last 13 seasons. The team, which has never won a conference or NBA title, faces city rivals the Lakers in its next regular-season game, on Wednesday 28 February.
