Klay Thompson Narrowing His Options Down To 3 Teams
Klay Thompson’s time with the Golden State Warriors appears to be coming to an end.
Between the team’s handling of his free agency, the financial realities that Golden State is dealing with, and where Thompson is in his career, a clean break seems to be the best thing for all parties involved.
Two weeks ago, Thompson officially severed ties with Stephen Curry. That earned a strong reaction from his other teaMMAte, Draymond Green.
But Thompson was right to do what he did. He saw the writing on the wall.
The question now becomes: where does Thompson go from here? Based on everything that is out there, he seems to have narrowed his options down to three teams.
The first is the Dallas Mavericks.
“With the Warriors and Thompson nowhere close to a contract agreement after a tumultuous season marked by fractious negotiations, multiple sources have indicated that the Mavericks are likely to emerge as the favorite to sign the shooting guard,” NBA insider Marc Stein wrote this week.
Dallas is “intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson,” Stein then reaffirmed.
The fit there speaks for itself. Thompson would be a perfect replacement for Tim Hardaway Jr. In many ways, he is the best version of that type of player.
If not the Mavericks, the Philadelphia 76ers continue to loom as a possible destination. They have about $65 million cap space this summer and could fulfill two things within Thompson’s criteria: pay him what he feels he is worth and offer him an opportunity to compete for a title.
Finally, the Los Angeles Lakers are another name that has frequently been linked to Thompson. L.A. desperately wants to dump D’Angelo Russell. Thompson is from the city. The synergy there is natural.
One way or another, Thompson will not be returning to the Warriors next year. Where will he end up playing when everything is said and done? Time will tell.
