Following more than a week at large, the unsettling saga involving the Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver has finally come to an end. On the other hand, it’s quite likely that his issues are only just getting started as he will now face the consequences for his actions which resulted in a multi-car crash.

Rashee Rice faces several charges after turning himself in

According to reports, the Kansas City Chiefs’ Rashee Rice surrendered himself to police on Thursday. The wide receiver’s move comes shortly after a warrant for his arrest was issued following a multi-vehicular crash in which he was involved late last month in Dallas. At the time video appeared to show Rice as well as several individuals fleeing the scene of the crash. It is understood that the 23-year-old was racing with another car when they collided with several others.

As per reports, Rice was taken into custody at Glenn Heights Police Department where his bond was set at $5,000 with a total surety bond of $40,000. It was not long before he posted bond and was then released. Regarding what comes next, Rice now faces eight charges, including six counts of collision involving bodily injury, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of collision involving serious bodily injury. The aggravated assault charge is a second-degree felony, while collision involving serious bodily injury is a third-degree felony. Incidentally, SMU cornerback Teddy Knox, Rice’s former teaMMAte, is also facing similar charges and was subsequently suspended from the program on Thursday. To be clear, Rice rented and leased the cars - a Lamborghini and a Corvette - that were involved in the crash that resulted in injuries - albeit minor - to several people.

Now, while he did later release a statement in which he apologized and took responsibility for his actions, it would still be almost a week before he finally surrendered himself to authorities. “Today I met with Dallas PD investigators regarding Saturday’s accident. I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities. I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident,” he said at the time. This of course brings us back to the present wherein Rice now faces the certainty of legal trouble in civil court and the uncertainty of what the NFL’s response will be. Indeed, it’s quite possible that the league will either fine or suspend him once the legal process comes to an end. To that end, it must be said that this is a disappointing twist in the story of an otherwise promising player who was the Chiefs’ best wide receiver this past season - his rookie campaign - one that ended with a Super Bowl win.
