Later this month, the musical prequel, Wicked, will be released globally, which means fans can finally see Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande belt their hearts out as Elphaba and Glinda. But that’s the only Oz-themed event that’s happening. It seems that an auction house is capitalising on the film’s much anticipated release because it’s auctioningauctioning off an integral object from the world’s lore and an iconic item from film History: the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy from the 1939 movie.

The Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz is up for Auction
Those who have seen the classic film know that the ruby slippers play a pivotal part in the story. After claiming the slippers for her own when the Wicked Witch of the East is killed by her tornado-swept house, Dorothy draws the ire of the Wicked Witch of the West who wants the slippers for her own. After accidentally killing the Witch, Glinda reveals that all Dorothy had to do go get back home to Kansas was click her heels twice and say “There’s no place like home”.
The ruby slippers were actually a deviation from the book. Dorothy wears silver slippers there but it was made ruby for the film to take advantage of the then-new Technicolor Technology. It has since become a coveted piece of film memorabilia, so much so that it was actually stolen by an ex-mobster in 2005.
Now everyone will have a chance to get their hands on it—legally, of course, and at a tremendous price. Heritage Auctions has put up the ruby slippers, which it got from a memorabilia collector. It’s been confirmed that this is the sister pair to the one currently sitting in the Smithsonian, and as such, is currently sitting at a USD $925,000 bid as of the writing of this article.
If you’ve got a cool million lying around, the ruby slippers could be yours. You have until December 7 to make a bid and hope that yours will be the winning one.
