Everything We Know About Elon Musk’s USD 35 Million Family Residence
Known as much for his innovative ventures as his personal life, the latest bombshell emerging about billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk — no, it’s not another baby onboard — is his brand new family compound in Texas.
Expanding his real estate footprint, Elon Musk has bought a secret compound in Austin, Texas. The family compound is a luxurious oasis that’s equal parts tech hub, eco-sanctuary and fortress of solitude. It consists of three houses, all within walking distance from one another and costs a whopping USD 35 million.
The multi-billionaire, who had lately been busy with the presidential campaign behind Donald Trump’s historic win, is obsessed with declining birthrates. Not only has this given rise to an unconventional family situation but Musk seems to be in no hurry to slow it down. Hence, the unusual family compound.
According to the New York Times, the main residence is a sprawling villa spread across 14,400 square feet and it is made taking inspiration from Tuscan villas. Accompanying the villa is a six-bedroom mansion directly behind it. When he is in Austin, the world’s richest man prefers staying at this third mansion which is located just about a 10-minute walk away.
That said, who else is actually living in this compound and why has Musk, the founder of companies like SpaceX and Tesla, spent a bomb in a residential space when he already has a lavish house in Boca Chica, Texas? We unravel all that and more as we delve into the details of Musk’s new family compound in Texas.
Elon Musk’s family compound: Three mansions for his 11 children and three former partners
The new secret family compound of Elon Musk in Texas has been designed to accommodate all 11 children along with their mothers. A big house for a big family.
Reportedly, Musk has shared with those around him that he imagines his kids and two of their three mothers (Shivon Zilis and Justine Wilson) living next to each other. This setup would allow his younger kids to grow up together, and it would make it easier for him to spend time with all of them.
Only one of the mothers, Neuralink director Shivon Zilis, has moved to Musk’s new property with three kids. Musk believes that keeping things private is super important, so he required the sellers to sign multiple non-disclosure agreements before wrapping up the home purchases, even though he was offering up to 70% of the market value. Meanwhile, Canadian singer and songwriter Grimes, a former partner of Musk and the mother of three of his children, has stepped back from the whole situation and the compound due to a custody disagreement, the New York Times reported.
The musician was pretty shaken when she found out about Musk’s children with Zilis, straining their relationship. Meanwhile, Musk’s first wife, Justine Wilson, who has five kids with him, wasn’t on board with the idea of living in the new compound either, according to the same report.
Elon Musk’s former partners and children
To understand the likely future family arrangement and who might move into his family compound in Texas, let’s explore Elon Musk’s relationships with his ex-wives and all of his children.
- Justine Wilson: The Canadian author was Musk’s first wife, with whom he had six children. Their first child, Nevada, tragically passed away as an infant, and they later welcomed twins Griffin and Vivian and triplets Saxon, Damian, and Kai. Musk and Wilson were married from 2000 to 2008.
- Talulah Riley: Actress Talulah Riley, who was married to Musk twice, had a relationship that ultimately fizzled out, in part because she wanted to focus on her acting career. They don’t have any children together.
- Claire Boucher (Grimes): Canadian singer Grimes used to date Musk, and together, they have three kids. Their relationship has been quite a rollercoaster but they welcomed their first child, X Æ A-Xii, in May 2020, followed by Exa Dark Sideræl and Techno Mechanicus (Tau) to complete their unique family.
- Shivon Zilis: Musk’s personal life took an interesting turn when he had twins with Shivon Zilis, a top executive at Neuralink, in November 2021. This happened right in the middle of his on-again, off-again romance with Grimes. The Musk family grew even more with the arrival of baby number 12 in 2024.
Now, with such complicated family dynamics, it’s unclear who will actually move into the family compound of Elon Musk. Some of the Tesla CEO’s older kids, including his daughter Vivian, seem to have a strained relationship with him. Vivian, who identifies as transgender, has openly called out her dad, implying that he doesn’t really fit the “family man” persona he’s trying to project.
