Katie Gaudreau has set a new wedding date after her brothers, Johnny and Matthew, died hours before her the date of her original ceremony.
According to her wedding website, Katie and her fiancé, Devin Joyce, will tie the knot on July 11, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The couple was originally scheduled to get married on August 30, 2024, but plans were tragically derailed after Johnny, a star forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Matthew were struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding their bicycles in Oldmans Township, New Jersey the night before the ceremony. Both brothers were scheduled to be groomsmen in the wedding.
Sean M. Higgins, the man who hit Johnny and Matthew with his vehicle, was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and remains in jail while awaiting his trial. Higgins’ blood-alcohol level was over the legal limit at the time of the crash and he admitted to law enforcement on the scene that he had been drinking while driving.
Shortly after her brothers’ deaths, Katie reflected on finding out about the news as she was making final preparations to walk down the aisle.
“That day,” Katie wrote via Instagram on September 5. “Right in the middle of getting ready for the best day of my life, the unthinkable happens that will change my life forever. I remember a week ago being in the hotel sitting with family and texting Devin about how we forgot to practice our dip. To think that was our biggest worry at this moment when in just a split second and a phone call later our lives would forever change.”
Katie added, “Remember to tell your people you love them. I would do anything to tell my big brothers I love them one more time.”
Last month, Katie revealed she had honored her brothers with a new engravement on her wedding band.
“Forever with me now. J & M,” Katie wrote via Instagram Story on September 7, sharing a photo of the band with Johnny and Matthew’s initials.
