Former Celtic striker turned pundit John Hartson has fired a warning to the club’s board ahead of a pivotal summer transfer window.

Regardless of how the current season ends, the Hoops must invest in quality this summer. There are too many players in the squad right now who the majority believe to be below par.

Whether they are attempting to win back the title or indeed retain it next season, Celtic need to get recruitment spot on over the next few months but a lack of coherence surrounding it is concerning.

Since Mark Lawell and Joe Dudgeon departed at the beginning of March, there has been no correspondence from the club regarding who is taking over from the pair or if there is a restructuring of the recruitment department taking place.

Celtic are continually being linked with players, but fans don’t know who is identifying them.

Regardless of who is in charge, though, Hartson thinks the board must invest money to ensure manager Brendan Rodgers is pleased and that European progression can be made.

He said: [Glasgow Times] “It’s important the Celtic board backs Brendan this summer and I think they will.

“They all saw the disappointing Champions League campaign. And I think they’ll now listen to the fact he was talking about bringing in real quality in January.

“I’m not saying they go and spend £10m on a player because that’s not really Celtic’s way.

“But I still expect the board to back Brendan. I think they have to. They need to help him get to the second phase of the Champions League because in recent years it’s been awful, it really, really has.

“There is money there now and I really do think Brendan will get the backing he wants because that’s all you hear him say.”
