In a notable show of confidence, Celtic Football Club has announced the extension of Liam Scales’ contract through 2028. The Republic of Ireland defender’s journey from a peripheral figure has been one of the surprises of this season.

Since transferring from Shamrock Rovers in August 2021, Scales’ trajectory at Celtic has been one of gradual ascension. Initially introduced in a League Cup match against Raith Rovers, he made modest contributions with 13 appearances and two goals during his debut season. The subsequent year saw him on loan to Aberdeen, playing a crucial role in his development and readiness for a more significant role upon his return.

The 2022/23 season marked a turning point for Scales at Celtic. He’s accumulated 40 appearances so far, and has been one of the main players in Celtic’s quest for silverware. Additionally, his international career has gained momentum with three appearances for Ireland.

Despite his steady performance, Scales remains a polarising figure among Celtic fans. His progression from an underused asset to a cornerstone of the team this season has not gone unnoticed, yet some supporters continue to question his consistency and ability to be a leader in the Celtic defence

Reacting to his new contract, Scales expressed enthusiasm about his future with Celtic. “I am delighted to agree to this new contract and commit my future to Celtic,” he said. “I have really enjoyed working under the gaffer and with such a great group of players this year and I look forward to doing so again in the coming seasons.”

“I love being part of this great club and I want to do all I can to contribute to Celtic and bring our fans as much success as we can.”

Liam has the opportunity with his Celtic teaMMAtes to end the season with a double if they can win their next five Games. No pressure!
