JJ Redick Must Meet 1 Condition To Become Next Lakers Coach

The Los Angeles Lakers very publicly pursued UConn head coach, Dan Hurley, to take over Darvin Ham’s old post. He politely rebuffed them and opted to return to the college Game instead.

Because Hurley spurned them, the Lakers were forced to return to the drawing back and attempt to restart conversations with the two favorites for their vacancy prior to the Hurley fiasco: J.J. Redick and James Borrego.

At the moment, Redick is viewed as a frontrunner for the position.

But he needs to meet one perquisite requirement first: performing well during an interview with the front office this weekend.

“Redick will formally interview for the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching job this weekend, and a strong performance is expected to move him to the forefront of the franchise’s search,” ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

“Redick, an ESPN NBA analyst who played 15 years in the league, had a 90-plus-minute visit with Lakers vice president and general manager Rob Pelinka last month at the Chicago draft combine. Now, a trip to Los Angeles will go far deeper into detail on the job and the meetings will include Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss, sources said.”

Wojnarowski’s colleague at ESPN, Brian Windhorst, also offered some interesting insight on Redick’s candidacy this week.

“Anytime you hire a first time head coach, you’re admitting that you’re going to go through a learning curve… Frankly, [JJ Redick’s] interviews have been in those podcasts with LeBron James,” Windhorst said on ESPN.

“Frankly, [JJ Redick’s] interviews have been in those podcasts with LeBron James. They’ve extensively broken down the Lakers’ offense, extensively broken down what they do. It’s been out there for the whole world to hear.”

Will Redick ultimately end up getting the Lakers head coaching job when everything is said and done? Time will tell.
