Jaime Munguia: “I respect Canelo, but I’m coming for my titles”
For most Mexican-Americans, there are a few things that Cinco de Mayo brings to mind. Apart from parades, mariachis, and lots of great food, the thing that stands out is Boxing. Great Boxing, and in particular, great Mexican Boxing.
While Cinco de Mayo is not a national holiday in Mexico itself, most Mexicans are well aware of the cultural significance of the holiday across their northern border. Jaime Munguia will certainly be more aware than most as a native of Tijuana.
This year, the Cinco de Mayo Boxing gods have smiled on us and given us two of the greatest Mexican fighters around, Canelo Álvarez and Jaime Munguia who will square off with all of the super middleweight titles in the world on the line.
Widely seen as a very long shot to beat Canelo Álvarez in Las Vegas this Saturday, Jaime Munguia is not overawed by the task in front of him. While still very reverential toward the undisputed face of Boxing, Munguia insists that he will be the one with his hand raised.
“I respect Canelo as a fighter, but I’m coming for my titles,” said Munguia in an interview with DAZN. “When I was coming up in my career, I always watched Canelo’s fights and I could see that he was a great fighter with a lot of skill, determination, and perseverance. That is why he has achieved everything that he has.”
Munguia continued, “It is a huge challenge for me to fight one of the best 168 pounders out there, but I believe in my ability and talent. I am undefeated and I am ready to show everyone on May 4 just how ready I am. I am ready to show Mexico and the whole world just what Jaime Munguia is made of.”
