Having recently passed Lynette Howard to become the all-time leading scorer in Division I women’s basketball history, the Iowa star will now be heading to the big time. Projected as the No. 1 overall pick for the upcoming Draft, it may be that the WNBA isn’t prepared for Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark declares for the 2024 WNBA Draft

According to her statement on Thursday, this will in fact be Caitlin Clark’s final collegiate season after the Iowa star announced that she will declare for the 2024 WNBA Draft. This has of course been an unreal season for Clark who not only became the collegiate Game’s all-time leading scorer but led Iowa to the championship Game where, unfortunately, the team fell to LSU. In her statement, Clark expressed gratitude to those who supported her during her time at Iowa. You can see her full statement below:

A bit of perspective on Caitlin Clark

Though we made it clear that Clark is a cut above the rest, it’s important to understand just what she achieved this past season. Currently on 3,650 career points, Clark passed Kelsey Plum for the NCAA women’s career scoring record earlier this month. What’s more, is that she is now just 18 points away from breaking Pete Maravich’s record for the NCAA scoring record among men and women. With Iowa taking on Ohio State in its final regular season game this Sunday, it’s quite likely that she will pass his mark as well.

Where the 2024 WNBA Draft itself is concerned, it will be held on April 15th, in New York City. As for the team, it’s the Indiana Fever that has the No. 1 pick for the second year in a row. Assuming they select Clark, she will join forces with reigning Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston to form what could be one of the most dangerous duos in the entire league. Interestingly, the pair have met before though Boston will almost certainly want to forget. Last season Clark was the reason she and her South Carolina teammates fell in the Final Four after Clark put 41 points on the board.

Truthfully, one has to imagine there are good times ahead for the Fever, a team that has seen its fortunes change drastically since making it to the postseason for 12 straight years (2005 - 2016), winning a title in 2012 and making two other appearances in the Finals as well. Since that time the franchise has struggled to the tune of a record that reads 58-174. Indeed, they’ve finished in last place on three occasions during that time and currently have the longest active playoff drought in the WNBA. Ultimately, with the progress that Boston made last season - helping the team to win more games than it had in the two seasons before - it stands to reason that Clark’s arrival will only make the Fever that much better. Between Boston’s effect in the paint and Clark’s shooting and playmaking, the Fever should have no trouble getting back on track.
