Real Madrid have been confirmed as 2023/24 LaLiga champions, after their win over Cádiz was followed by defeat for Barcelona at Girona.

In today’s 10:15am ET kick-off, second-half goals by Brahim Díaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu Mato gave Madrid a 3-0 victory at the Bernabéu, whose home fans could be heard singing “champions, champions” after the final whistle. Victory for Los Blancos meant that, in the day’s following matchday-34 clash, Barça had to beat Girona to prevent their arch rivals from becoming champions.

Despite twice leading at Montilivi, Xavi Hernández’s men were defeated 4-2 by their fellow Catalans - whose triumph not only handed Madrid the title, but also saw Míchel Sánchez’s side leapfrog the Blaugrana into second. Girona’s win, courtesy of goals by Artem Dovbyk and Miguel Gutiérrez, and a brace by Portu, confirmed the Blanquivermells’ qualification for the Champions League for the first time in their History.

How many LaLiga titles have Real Madrid won?

Having clinched the title today, Real Madrid have now won LaLiga 36 times. That’s comfortably more Spanish championships than any other club: Barça, with 27, are Los Blancos’ nearest challengers in the all-time standings. Atlético Madrid are third, with 11 titles. Across Europe’s five major leagues - the Bundesliga, LaLiga, Ligue 1, the Premier League and Serie A - only Juventus have as many domestic crowns. Madrid have today drawn level with the Italians’ haul of 36.

This is the third time in the last five years that Los Vikingos have been crowned LaLiga champions. That’s the most titles that the club have managed in such a space of time since the days of the ‘Quinta del Buitre’ - a team, which, led by legendary former striker Emilio Butragueño, lifted five successive championships between 1985/86 and 1989/90.

LaLiga's top five most decorated clubs

  • 1. Real Madrid: 36 titles
  • 2. Barcelona: 27 titles
  • 3. Atlético Madrid: 11 titles
  • 4. Athletic Club: 8 titles
  • 5. Valencia: 6 titles

Madrid becoming more consistent LaLiga winners under Pérez

Madrid’s latest Spanish title win offers further evidence of a shifting trend in Florentino Pérez’s presidency of the club. Until recent times, Pérez’s stewardship - which, across two spells, has lasted for 21 years since summer 2000 - had not been characterised by regular success in LaLiga. In Pérez’s first 13 seasons in charge, indeed, Madrid managed just three league titles. At one stage of the 77-year-old’s tenure, moreover, Los Merengues had more trophy wins in the Champions League, theoretically the tougher comPetition of the two, than they did in LaLiga.

However, although Madrid are yet to lift back-to-back Spanish titles under Pérez - something they have achieved in the Champions League, winning three straight European Cups between 2016 and 2018 - they have now developed into far more consistent domestic performers. Having been limited to just a trio of LaLiga victories under Pérez before 2016/17, Madrid have now registered four championships in the subsequent eight seasons of the construction magnate’s presidency. In other words: the club has gone from winning the league around once every four seasons under Pérez, to winning it every two seasons.

Can Madrid win LaLiga with a points record?

No, but they can get very close. After beating Cádiz, Madrid have 87 points, with four matches still to play in LaLiga this term. If Ancelotti’s men win each of their remaining Games of the season, against Granada, Alavés, Villarreal and Real Betis, they will finish the top-flight campaign with 99 points - one shy of the record. Madrid themselves were the first club to win 100 points in LaLiga, under José Mourinho in 2011/12. Barça then emulated that feat the following season.
