Houston Texans Futures Odds 2023, Win Totals & Season Predictions

It was just 4 seasons ago that the Houston Texans were one of the best teams in the NFL. However, things haven’t been the same since Houston blew a 24-0 lead to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round back in January 2020. Since that point, the Texans have fallen off a cliff, finishing with a combined record of 11-34-1 over the last 3 regular seasons. This season represents a new start for Houston, as the Texans had their most productive NFL Draft in years and signed a myriad of free agents that should aid their rookies during this rebuilding process. Let’s take a look at some of the odds and best bets to be made on the Houston Texans this season.

Houston Texans 2022 NFL season recap

Much like the two years priors, the 2022 NFL season was another miserable campaign for the Houston Texans, as they finished with a 3-13-1 record and ended up with the 2nd pick in the 2023 NFL Draft as a result. The offense never got off the ground thanks to poor quarterback play and the defense couldn’t keep opposing offenses out of the end zone. After a Week 1 tie against the Colts, Houston won just 3 games for the remainder of the season and it was clear that the Texans desperately needed a change.

Houston Texans 2023 NFL season predictions

Bringing in a solid draft class is a good start to building a consistent contender, especially in a conference as loaded as the AFC. Realistically it makes sense for Houston to have another season where the team loses 12 or more Games, gets a high draft pick and builds more toward a future playoff appearance or division title. The Texans first have to see if their pick at #2 overall was the right one, as CJ Stroud will begin his rookie season with a trip to Baltimore for a date with a formidable Ravens defense. The offense got a full overhaul with the additions of Dalton Schultz, Devin Singletary and more, while the defense added Will Anderson Jr. in the draft and Sheldon Rankins via free agency. Let’s get into our best bet for the Texans this season.

Best bet: Houston Texans under 6.5 wins (-140)

While there are promising building blocks on this Texans roster, it’s hard to imagine a world in which Houston picks up 7 wins with a rookie quarterback, new head coach and an abundance of new pieces across the roster. The talent isn’t on par with the top 2 teams in the AFC South, and Houston doesn’t even have a player like Jonathan Taylor who can divert defenses attention away from its rookie under center. The problem becomes the schedule. While the Texans do draw the NFC South, Houston also has to face the entirety of the AFC North, in addition to the likes of the Broncos, Jets and more. Getting to a respectable 7 wins is a tall task for most young teams, much less a squad that is breaking in so many new parts. I’ll take the under with relative comfort.

Houston Texans season record prediction: 4-13

I can’t see the Texans winning more than 2 games in the division, and that’s a generous projection. Elsewhere, I have Houston knocking off Tampa Bay and Arizona, but games at Carolina and at Atlanta are also winnable in theory. With roughly 6 or 7 games where I could see a win on the schedule, I’ll take Houston to slightly improve on its win total of the last few seasons and finish with a 4-13 record.
