After a long wait, HBO’s House of the Dragon Season 2 is finally here. After the shocking ending of season 1, the Greens and the Blacks were left on the brink of war. The second season confirms that war is inevitable as the two families continue to tussle for power. Rhaenyra Targaryen, furious and grieving after the usurpation of the Iron Throne and the death of her son Lucerys Velaryon, has anything but peace in her mind. As things begin to heat up this season from the first episode itself,  here is the entire release schedule of House of the Dragon season 2, including episode 3 and beyond.

The show has proven itself to be a worthy successor to Game of Thrones. Like GoT, it is based on a book by George R. R. Martin. A spinoff and a prequel, it is set two centuries before the events of GoT, though, like the original, it also centres around the struggle for the Iron Throne.

Spoilers ahead!

What happened in House of the Dragon Season 2 episode 1?

The first episode begins quite gently as we are introduced to the Starks of those times (ancestors of Jon Snow, Arya Stark and their siblings). Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor), who will be known as Wolf of the North, converses with Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett) about the impending war. As is the wont of Starks, Cregan says he is more focused on the threat from the extreme north rather than any puny war down south. But he says he can spare some old soldiers, called greybeards.

Meanwhile, Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) and Daemon (Matt Smith) bicker over what to do next, with the latter saying Rhaena would have ended the war and all their enemies if she had roasted them all when she had the chance. Corlys (Steve Toussaint) thanks Alyn of the Hull (Abubakar Salim) who saved his life. Those who have read the book will know who Alyn really is.

At the Small Council, Aegon II, the king, wishes to end the war quickly using Vhagar, now the most powerful dragon left in the world. Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) advises restraint. Rhaenyra (EMMA D’Arcy) finally gets closure when she finds Lucerys’ charred remains somewhere on the beach. She returns to Dragonstone and declares she wants Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). Heeding her, Daemon hires a couple of cutthroats, one a rat catcher and one a member of the City Watch, to kill Aemond. But they are clueless and enter Queen Helaena’s (Phia Saban) room instead. After asking her who is the male heir among the two babies, they kill Jaehaerys. While Aemond did not die, it is indeed a son for a son.

Where does the conflict brewing in House of the Dragon currently stand?

The last episode of House of the Dragon season 1 ended with Westeros teetering on the edge of the war that was always coming — despite valiant attempts to avoid it. Prince Lucerys Velaryon, the son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Laenor Velaryon, was killed and devoured along with his dragon Lucerys by Prince Aemond Targaryen’s dragon Vhagar. The dragons engaged in battle without being provoked by their riders. However, there is no way Aemond and Alicent will be able to convince Rhaenyra of that. House of the Dragon season 2 episode 1 should show that, but this means war.
