This weekend, David Turnbull made a surprise return to Scottish football, not as a player, but as a spectator.

The former Celtic midfielder was spotted at Fir Park, taking in the action as his former side, Motherwell, faced off against Kilmarnock. Turnbull, who recently made a move to Cardiff City, appeared relaxed and happy to be back at the ground where he first made his name.

His journey from Motherwell to Celtic in 2020 was highly anticipated, with many expecting him to become a key figure in Celtic’s midfield. Despite showing flashes of his undeniable talent, Turnbull’s time at Celtic was marked by inconsistency.

While he contributed with some crucial goals and assists, he never quite managed to cement his place as a regular starter. The competition for places in Celtic’s midfield was fierce, and although Turnbull had the technical skills and vision, he struggled to maintain the consistency required to be a first-choice option.

By January 2024, with his contract nearing its end, Turnbull made the decision to seek a new challenge, signing with Cardiff City. The move was seen as a fresh start for Turnbull, offering him the opportunity to rediscover his form and secure regular first-team Football in the EFL Championship.

His visit to Fir Park is a reminder of his roots and the journey that took him from a promising youth at Motherwell to the heights of Celtic Park, and now to the comPetitive environment of English Football. It was great to see him back watching the Game up here.
