Lawrence Toafili over 42.5 rushing yards (-119)

This is quite a juicy matchup on paper for Florida State’s rushing attack, as the Yellow Jackets finished 131st in rushing yards allowed per game last season and 111th in PFF’s rush defense grade. Toafili has plenty of experience in Mike Norvell’s system, averaging more than 6.2 yards per carry in his 4-year Florida State career, and should be a direct beneficiary of Norvell’s desire to improve the rushing attack after finishing 46th nationally in yards per carry and 77th in rush yards per game last year.

Toafili’s 6.7 yards per carry was the best on the team of those who carried the ball at least 10 times, including nearly a full yard better than Trey Benson’s 5.8 yards per carry. Benson now plays for the Arizona Cardinals, but Toafili probably won’t become FSU’s bell-cow running back this season due to the arrival of Alabama transfer Roydell Williams. Fortunately for Toafili, Williams has not been a lead back himself in his 4-year collegiate career – so the duo will likely share the workload running behind a highly experienced offensive line that could end up being one of the nation’s best. With a line more than 20 yards lower than Williams’, Toafili should be able to surpass this total on at least 7-8 carries.

DJ Uiagalelei anytime touchdown scorer (+138)

Another play on Florida State’s rushing attack. Uiagalelei may be in his first season at Florida State, but he is no stranger to scoring with his legs. He has scored on the ground at least 6 times in each of the last 2 seasons, including once against Georgia Tech in Week 1 of the 2022 season when he was the starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers and twice in Oregon State’s first game last year when he started for the Beavers. In fact, Uiagalelei was a fairly good runner for the Beavers as a whole last season. He finished tied for 11th in PFF’s rushing grade out of 114 qualifying non-running backs, and fumbled just twice on 65 carries. Given Norvell’s desire to be better on the ground this season, I expect the 6’4″, 250 lbs quarterback to carry the ball plenty of times against Georgia Tech – especially in goal-line situations. For what it’s worth, the Yellow Jackets allowed opposing quarterbacks to rush for touchdowns in 5 different games last year.

Eric Singleton Jr. over 55.5 receiving yards (-119)

Eric Singleton Jr. exploded onto the scene last year as a true freshman. He scored in his first 5 games, tallied more than 700 yards, averaged almost 15 yards per catch and was 5th in the ACC in yards per route run. He finds himself in an interesting matchup against a Florida State secondary that lost 3 of its top 4 coverage defenders and returns multiple starters who yielded at least 10 yards per catch in 2023, including Fentrell Cypress and Azareye’h Thomas – who allowed 19.3 and 14.9 respectively. The Seminoles also lost their 2 best pass rushers in Kalen DeLoach and Jared Verse, which may buy quarterback Haynes King a little extra time in the pocket to find Singleton. Even if the Seminoles can get to King, he has the ability to roll out of the pocket and find Singleton for big gains.
